Luc Tuymans is considered to be one of the most influential artists of his generation and this show is his first major exhibition in the UK. Tuymans' work covers an enormous range, from the banality of the everyday such as plants and mirrors to important historical events such as The Holocaust. The show features seventy works which examine the twin themes of history and memory.

Luc Tuymans (b1958, Belgium) is one of the most highly regarded and influential painters of his generation and this exhibition is the first major presentation of his work in the UK. Unerring in his commitment to the art of painting, Tuymans has been at the forefront of re- energising the medium for the last two decades and has had a profound influence on younger artists.

Tuymans has invigorated contemporary painting with a new seriousness – his work encompasses topics such as politics, history, memory and the uncanny in these subtle and beguiling works. He depicts a dizzying range of subject matter, from the apparently banal and matter of fact (embroideries, plants, plates and wrapping paper), to images that obliquely reference some of the most heinous events in twentieth-century history, including Nazism and the brutal end of colonialism in the Belgian Congo.

His work is noted for a feeling of suppressed violence and impending menace, hinting at the hidden terrors that lurk beneath the surface of ordinary, everyday life. Tuymans' technique increases the sense of queasiness. Through the use of a restricted palette of muddy and faded colours or even toxically bright ones, Tuymans embues his works with a powerful sense of history and memory. Each painting in the exhibition acts as a form of remembrance, via the objects, materials and interiors that are silent witnesses to momentous or deeply banal events.

The exhibition features over seventy works and gives a comprehensive overview of Tuymans' artistic output over the last twenty years, as well as including new works which have never been displayed before.

An exhibition by Tate Modern, London and K21, Düsseldorf.
