Rachel and Seth Scharon, Catherine D. Johnson, and Victoria Dye

comunicato stampa

Photographer Victoria Dye’s work has been featured in Photographer’s Forum Magazine, World in Focus, and Photofocus. Appearing in the Helena Davis gallery, Art in Nature: Black and White illustrates the natural existence of art in nature while offering to the viewer a new perspective of environmental photography. These beautiful close-up photographs of flowers at night draw the viewer into a new world of nocturnal observation. All photographs were taken with a Canon EOS system.

Presented in the Main Gallery, Rachel and Seth Scharon’s Seeking Balance describes the work of two photographers who have developed their art side-by-side over the past five years. At the core of their artistic vision lies a profound reverence for nature and the cycles of life. Visual elements include water, trees, landscapes and the human form. Symbols of life, time, death, and renewal are present as well. Every photograph is hand-printed black & white gelatin Silver. While Rachel and Seth do share the same medium and inspiration, the technical and artistic decisions they make reveal their individual interpretations. Darkroom overlays, manipulations, and in-camera multiple exposures produce complex, intriguing compositions. Rachel and Seth Scharon have been featured at the Fraser Gallery (Bethesda, MD), Sassafras Gallery (Baltimore, MD) and Holtzman Art Gallery (Towson, MD).

Catherine D. Johnson, whose exhibit Street Scenes is on display in the Foyer Gallery, is a member and Past-President of Artspace. Her work has been exhibited at Artspace, 1708 Gallery, Shockoe Bottom Arts Center, and Corporate Museum & Frame. In these diminutive photographs, Johnson depicts intimate pieces of urban time. Using a photographic technique called emulsion transfer, the artist creates new textures and dimensions as the film streaks and cracks when it is transferred from its original backing to water color paper.

The First Friday Opening Reception is from 8-10:30 pm, August 6, 2004.

The gallery will also be open on the Fourth Friday, August 27th from 7-9 pm. All exhibits will close Sunday, August 29, 2004. Artspace is open Wednesday through Sunday, from 12 to 4 pm and by appointment. artspace is located at Zero East 4th Street within Plant Zero, in the recently designated Arts District in Manchester, Richmond VA.
