Maja Godlewska

Artist Maja Godlewska, 7 year Charlotte resident, will have a one-woman show at Joie Lassiter Gallery beginning September 10th, 2004.

Originally from Poland, with an MFA from the Academy of Fine Art, Wroclaw, Godlewska brings together the classical style of European art and a twentieth century sensibility in “Templates”-her latest body of work.

To experienced collectors, seasoned viewers, and neophytes alike, Godlewska's work inspires, amazes, and never fails to arrest attention. Her vast canvases are rich in texture; earth and jeweled-toned colors (often incorporating the red Carolina clay itself as a component of the pigment) sweep across landscapes and the occasional nude beckons. The artist experiments with the symbol of a human body by overlapping it and merging it with landscapes presenting it as a microcosm, merging the two as an organic whole.

However, an area for contemplation is the way the artist moves in and out of reality-playing with abstraction and figurative elements, spirituality and humanity. Godlewska is inspired by Rococo: its ascending compositions, based on organic irregular forms and material becoming immaterial. The viewer is pushed to think about the fragile nature of life, the ambivalence as humans have for our own bodies, and the ultimate shedding of the flesh.

This is indeed a powerful, provocative exhibit-which is the hallmark of Joie Lassiter Gallery. The show is located at 525 North Tryon St. on the ground floor of the Odell Building, uptown.
