'open your eyes'

Galerie Beukers has a very special Dutch first, Omar Galliani, who is only to be seen in large museums throughout the world during the year 2004, will be present at the opening of his solo-exhibition 'Open Your Eyes' in Rotterdam on Sunday the 31st of October. Last year, Omar Galliani made headlines in the artworld when he won the prize for best work of art at the China Museum of Fine Art for his triptych 'New Anatomies'. Galerie Beukers presents a selection of his recent series of drawings for which the artist uses the breathtaking and unique technique of pencil on panel. Two important new panels from the newest series 'new saints' will be shown as well.

Omar Galliani was born in Montecchio Emilia in Italy in 1954, where he still lives and works. In 1977 he graduated at the Bologne Academie of Art and in the same year he had his first solo-exhibition. His interest in the Archeology of Art History is ever present in his work, at first only at a conceptual level and later as an archetypical presence in his work. In the eighties the artist worked with oil paint on canvas but later on he decided to return to the essential purity of the drawing.

Contrasts that are emphasized are those of softness and roughness, darkness and light, life and death. Consequently, he arrives at using the pencil which, for him, is the most powerful means of translating these contradictions. The pencil embodies the shadow, the darkness with its inanimate hardness; the panel embodies warmth, the light of life of living wood. The wooden surface, moreover, continues to live after completion of the work, the aging process of the art work tends to give it an ever increasing glow of warmth as it grows older. At the moment the painter has almost completed his series of 'new anatomies' inspired by the ethereal beauty of ancient iconography and the anatomy that, in blood-red, discovers the underlying human life.

Omar Galliani: ' These paintings on wood for Charlotte Beukers announce the reinstatement and rebirth of the drawing. Not only a salute to a technique, but also a confirmation of the original value a drawing has for the development of a project into completion. The large art works which are to be exhibited in Rotterdam reunite past, present and future. This is achieved through an essential technique (of the lead from the pencil and the vegetation of the wood) which unites both simple and complex symbolism.
