Negativlandland

Gigantic ArtSpace [GAS] is proud to present Negativlandland, an exhibition by the 'cultural jamming' group Negativland. Negativland poses questions about the nature of perception, media control, ownership, and propaganda. The exhibition will take place in conjunction with the group's 25th anniversary and will feature the collective's recent visual work as well as their trademark sonic work.

Over the years Negativland's "illegal" collage and appropriation-based audio and visual works have touched on many things - media hoaxes and pranks, anti-corporate activism, the banality of suburban existence, file sharing, intellectual property issues, media literacy, and artistic critiques of mass media and culture. In this exhibition, Negativland parodies the theme park catapulting us into deconstructed attractions of the gallery as multi-media entertainment destination. Also on view will be an unauthorized special edition of a U2 vs. Negativland ipod (version 2G), created by Francis Hwang.

Negativland performs, lectures, writes and tours both in the US and in Europe. Their work is included in college curricula throughout the US, it has been discussed in over 30 books (including NO LOGO by Naomi Klein, MEDIA VIRUS by Douglas Rushkoff, and various biographies of the band U2) and is cited in many legal journals.

Kristine Potter
Laws of Nature

Gas Station is pleased to announce our inaugural exhibition, Laws of Nature by artist Kristine Potter.

Nature, from a certain perspective, has not always existed. It is not found in the depths of the forest, in the heart of the cougar or in the songs of birds; it is found in the philosophies and image constructions of civilized human beings. Seemingly contradictory strands are woven together creating nature as an ideological construct that serves to domesticate us, and to channel or suppress our expressions of wildness. Trees, water, fire and animals are all a part of this natural world that my subjects inhabit.' ­ Kristine Potter, 2005

The show presents a selection of photographs from Potter's Laws of Nature series from 2004-2005. Through her images, the artist addresses our ideas of 'Nature' and our relationship with it.

Potter's subjects are often depicted indoors set against nature-inspired wallpaper and prints, in front of a fireplace and sometimes with potted plants or flowers in the room. These raise questions about the meaning of bringing such things into our homes. In other images, her subjects are found in a forest or a body of water, bringing to question how we feel when outdoors. In Brian with the Lucky Cat, her subject stands on the pavement, another human construct and the line between his world and the lush green growth of 'Nature' behind him. Her intention is to, 'describe a certain psychological moment in each of the sitters as they blend in, interact with or respond to their environment.'

Kristine Potter was born in Dallas, Texas in 1977 and raised in rural, central Georgia. She attended The University of Georgia where she earned a B.A. in The History of Art and a B.F.A. in Photography. Following University, Kristine moved to Paris, France where she lived and worked for several years. She has exhibited nationally and internationally and has been the recipient of several fellowships and grants including the Larry Kramer fellowship for Gender Studies. She is a graduate of the MFA program in Photography from Yale University and currently resides in New York City.
