17th and 18th French Masterpieces from German Collections

Exhibition curator: Pierre Rosenberg

Over 170 representative paintings are on display in this ambitious German-French exhibition project. The paintings are on loan from various German collections and offer a multi faceted overview of French painting ranging from followers of Caravaggio to disciples of the Neo-Classicists of the early 1800s. Renowned masterpieces by Chardin, Boucher, Lorrain, Poussin, David and Watteau are juxtaposed with works by artists such as Valentin, Bourdon and Dughet, who are less well known in Germany. At the same time, the project reflects the origins of important German collections. The loan from the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, composed of more than 50 works, is the exhibition’s largest, reflecting the reception of French art in Germany.

After an extremely successful exhibition premier at the Grand Palais in Paris, the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen presents, in cooperation with the Haus der Kunst, this German-French project in a second and expanded version, including several famous and important works not shown in Paris, in Munich’s Haus der Kunst.

The exhibition curator, Pierre Rosenberg, visited numerous museums and their storage spaces during his eleven trips through several German cities, enabling him to bring new rediscoveries and treasures to light to the benefit of historians and science as well as the exhibition’s visitors. Arranged chronologically, geographically and thematically – landscape, portrait, still life and historical – this collection of paintings and oil sketches provides a comprehensive overview of the most significant developments in 17th and 18th century French painting.

The project has been made possible by the generous support of many German museums. Thanks to their willingness to make these outstanding masterpieces available to the public, a complex portrait of the flourishing of 17th and 18th century French culture is conveyed, a flourishing that reached into several German seats of power and cultural centers.

“Poussin, Lorrain, Watteau, Fragonard… 17th and 18th French Masterpieces in German Collections“ is a cooperative effort between the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, the Stiftung Haus der Kunst, Munich, the Kunst- und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, Bonn and the Réunion des Musées Nationaux, Paris.
