Rupert Howard - New Work

Brooklyn Coalition of Artists, Brooklyn, NY

comunicato stampa

British born artist Rupert Howard is presenting new works created in late 1999 at the 12th Street Bar in Park Slope, Brooklyn. The Brooklyn resident is known also as an illustrator at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal. This exhibit has given him the opportunity to loosen up with his subject matter and methods. The exhibit will be on view through March, 2000.

His subjects - primarily images of drunken nightlife and sexual situations, permeates the series. The scenes he paints are fantastic; fantastic that the night can be so graphic and colorful; fantastic in the depths his subjects take.
These series of paintings were painted much more loosely than his larger canvases from the mid 90's, and use acrylic paint on scrap paper, wood, cardboard and old canvas. This approach permitted him to paint quickly without obsessing over each piece, allowing him to finish a number of works.

Mr. Howard was born in London to beatnik parents, and lived briefly in India. He studied art in Liverpool and graduated in 1982. While staying at the Chelsea Hotel in 1983, he painted a large canvas which quickly sold at a group exhibit. The success prompted him to move to New York in 1984. He has shown in a variety of alternative spaces, bars and restaurants since, while maintaining studios in Harlem and SOHO. He currently lives and works in Park Slope.

The Brooklyn Coalition of Artists in Park Slope promotes Member Artists by numerous individual and small group exhibits in Park Slope, maintaining an internet gallery and providing Members with outside exhibit information.
