Harold Offeh, Ansuman Biswas and Erika Tan

Ghosting is a series of newly commissioned works by Ansuman Biswas, Harold Offeh and Erika Tan, who explore themes of archive, memory and ethnography through three visually and orally rich moving image installations.

Harold Offeh's Being Mammy is an attempt to explore the world of the 'Mammy' caricature and evoke the tragedy of the typecast actor doomed to recreate and replay the same role. Offeh has examined the life and career of actress Hattie McDaniel, who famously won an Oscar for her role as 'Mammy' in Gone With the Wind. This multi-media installation combines several performance video works contextualised by a series of objects.

Ansuman Biswas' Season is a four-screen installation that examines memory, identity, ghosts, rhythm and the roots of culture, partly refracted through an autobiographical lens. Biswas has constructed a pictorial and musical
essay on journeying, death and the seasonal cycles. The work combines a colourful video of a ten-day-long Hindu funeral, with old, black and white, grainy pictures of Devon life.

Erika TanĀ¹s Persistent Visions is a three-screen installation that questions the nature, status and classification of archive collections within the empire and commonwealth story at the Museum in Bristol. By interrogating the
vaults of stored material culture Tan illuminates hidden meanings and messages, unearthing personal and subjective histories occluded by the grander structures of empire.
