New Work by Nicky Coutts

Another Land is an exhibition of new work by London-based artist Nicky Coutts, inspired by Flemish medieval painter Hieronymus Bosch. It will be shown concurrently with ‘Visions of the Low Countries: A Golden Age of Dutch and Flemish Art’ at the Graves Art Gallery, Sheffield from 14 January - 1 April 2006.

Hieronymus Bosch (1450 - 1516) is celebrated as an eccentric painter of religious visions and utopian fantasies of other worlds. In Another Land, three of Bosch's paintings: The Garden of Earthly Delights, The Temptation of St Anthony and The Last Judgement are transformed by Coutts into haunting landscape images. The original paintings have been re-photographed and painstakingly digitally altered to remove every sign of life so that only the background elements remain. The only trace of the former inhabitants is the objects they appear to have abandoned. It is as though either they have wandered off and might return, or perhaps something more troubling has occurred.

Coutts’ photographs explore the representation of extreme environments. Heaven and Hell are pictured as settings, or stage sets, divorced from the events and activities that usually define them. The viewer is invited to navigate these strange and unsettling spaces anew.

Nicky Coutts’ recent exhibitions include ‘The Art of White’, The Lowry, Manchester, ‘The Entangled Eye’, Tokyo, Japan, ‘Animality’, Dunedin, New Zealand, ‘Love, Labour & Loss’, Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle and Royal Albert Museum & Art Gallery, Exeter and ‘After Dolly’, ICA, London.

Another Land is one of four shows at The Graves to feature contemporary artists who use historical paintings as a reference point. Other artists in the series include Bill Viola, Tom Hunter and UTK.
