Martha Zuik, Guillermo Figoli, and Kaia Kiik

Internationally renowned artist Martha Zuik stands at the forefront of Left Coast Galleries’ most recent offering. The spring group show explores the contrast between the fantastic and the real in this collection of expressive works by Zuik, Guillermo Figoli (Zuik’s protégé), and artist Kaia Kiik. Left Coast Galleries is celebrating a successful inaugural year representing contemporary art with a main Gallery in Studio City and a satellite space in Hollywood. An Artists’ Reception will be held on Thursday, April 26th , 2007, from 6pm to 9pm at Left Coast Galleries at 12324 Ventura Boulevard, Studio City, CA 91604.

Zuik was born in 1941 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Her career as an artist began in the late 1950’s with a 15-year involvement in the group Fantasmagique, with whom she exhibited in Belgium, France, Holland, Germany, and other European countries. Fantasmagique was predominantly formed by European artists, including Magritte, Picasso, Bellmer, Labisse, and Fini. Zuik, whose career has been marked by her persistent and restless pursuit of continual education and transformation, graduated with a degree in psychology in 1969. Her extensive body of work includes drawings, paintings, engravings and sculpture, which she has exhibited for 50 years throughout Europe, the United States, and South America. Her work is included in dozens of private and permanent collections all over the world, including the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America and the National Museum of Women in the Arts, both in Washington DC, and the Museum of Modern Art in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

In addition to Zuik’s work, Left Coast will be showcasing emerging artist Guillermo Figoli. Figoli, born in Uruguay in 1973, began his training in 1991 at the Panamerican School of Arts in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His training with Zuik from 2003 to 2004 marks a distinct shift in his work as an artist. During this time Guillermo discovered the impact of working with different color palates and the relationships between them, as well as the importance of expressing his emotions on the canvas. When asked about Figoli, Zuik notes “He is my favorite student. When I make a critique of his work, he listens and implements what I have suggested.” Their friendship and mutual influence are still active today, as they are in constant communication. Since his premier show in Uruguay in 1996, Figoli has completed successful shows in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Spain and Southern California. This will be the first show where Zuik and Figoli will exhibit together.

Kaia Kiik both compliments and completes the exhibition with her unique series of portraits. Born in Estonia in 1973, Kiik has lived in Paris since 1992. Earning her Doctorate of Philosophy in contemporary art from the Sorbonne, Kiik’s passion is not limited to the creation of art, but also embraces that which informs and influences her creations. In 2006, Kaia participated in her first biennale and her work has appeared in exhibitions in France, Germany and Estonia since 1991.
