comunicato stampa

Art Taipei is the leading art fair among Asia devoted to contemporary art. In its fifteenth annual exhibition, Art Taipei 2007 moves into World Trade Center II and will house a total of 80 galleries, including many of the most important contemporary dealers showcasing new art from around the world.

There are three sectors in Art Taipei 2007, which remains the same as previous edition: Art Galleries, Asia Live: Art and Literature, and Ela-Asia.

Asia Live is the sector dedicated to contemporary arts with a concept of presenting the art trends announced by the Committee every year. With “Art and Literature” as its theme, Art Taipei 2007 will focus on the use of literary texts in contemporary arts and the reinterpretation of the literary spirit in the new media age.

Inaugurated last year, Ela- Asia, electronic arts in Asia, is the sector dedicated to Digital and Video arts. By Collaborating with the expert in this filed, DiVA (Digital and Video Art Fair), Art Taipei had become one of the only art fair among Asia with the specific concern in this new media.

Asia Live: Art and Literature

Art and literature are the two earliest civilized activities that developed in human history. Whether in eastern or western culture, they have collided and challenged each other for several thousand years. Following the evolution of human thought, art and literature have been shaped by various thinking and isms. Through open texts, contemporary arts and literature in the 21st century work together to embody the spirit and recreate the significance. With “Art and Literature” as its theme, Art Taipei 2007 will focus on the use of literary texts in contemporary arts and the interpretation of the literary spirit in the new media age.

1. The writing (and rewriting) of myths
From the pictorial representation of myths in ancient civilizations to the postmodernist deconstruction of myths and totems, myths, the earliest literary form have been repeatedly explored in art. In recent years, decorative works with mythical undertones or works of magical fantasies embody the new concept of myth in pop culture.

2. The construction (and deconstruction) of writing
As the primary elements of literature, linguistic signs have both visual and audio properties and also signify something else. As individual and collective changes take place, writing functions as a figurative bridge between man and abstract thinking. The use of script or the recreation of script in contemporary arts endows linguistic signs with a new philosophical outlook.

3. The contemporariness of emotions
Emotions are the basis of literature and art. Human emotions seem to be passively shaped by different historical events – particularly those related to desire, war and fear. Contemporary arts and literature repeat the patterns of historical texts with new interpretations that reflect our times.

4. The living theatre
Theatre is the synthesis of art and literature. As mundane matters become the focus of 21st century arts, coupled by the increasing intervention of the media and the internet in our lives and the gradual elimination of the gap between reality and make-believe, theatrics has seeped into people’s everyday life. A living theatre that monitors the mix up between private and public spaces is quickly spreading.

5. The propagation of books
Are books the ultimate form of carrying texts? Under the present technological development, texts are being transformed from static writings into mobile information. The two-dimensional space of books has opened up, with endless possibilities of extension and imagination. As human perception of writing and narration changes, new artistic forms will continue to interpret the texts of the digital age as the propagation of books.
