New Interior Design in Russia

New Interior Design in Russia

Architects: Atrium, Boris Bernaskoni, Alexander Brodsky, Michail Filippov, Alexey Kozyr, Natalia Mali (photographer)

Almost two decades after the perestroika, architecture in Russia has rid itself of its initial eclecticism and found its own way: the new desire for space manifests itself for example in elaborate projects in interior design. The reasons for this are obvious: apart from wealthy building-owners who in their search for originality for their private space spare no expenses when commissioning established architects, it is especially the younger generation who attracts public attention with their extravagant interior designs. These architectural statements that manifest themselves in the works and interviews, are founded upon a thought-through theoretical point of view.

In front of this backdrop, the exhibition "Desire for Space" presents five positions of Russian architects – Alexander Brodski, Boris Bernaskoni, Alexei Kosir, Anton Nadtochy / Vera Butko and Michail Filipov – which are exemplary for interior design in the new Russia. The exhibition is complemented with a photographic series by the well-known Moscow-based artist Natalia Mali, who plays with stereotypes of "female" interiors and the role of women in society.

The exhibition "Desire for Space. New Interior Design in Russia" is part of the ifa galleries' series on design in 2007, which commenced with "stitched. Fashion Made in Mongolia" and is continued with "in site. Interior Design in India". In thematic exhibitions, the ifa galleries in Stuttgart and Berlin present and convey contemporary art, architecture and design from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe. The programme not only stimulates intercultural dialogue in Germany, but also initiates lively cultural exchange in the sense of give-and-take.

With their selection and presentation, the curators Philipp Meuser (Berlin) and Bart Goldhoorn (Moscow) intend to introduce the works of outstanding interior designers to an international audience and to integrate these positions into the contemporary discourse about the role of architecture in the new Russia.

The exhibition architecture is conceived by Meuser Architekten BDA (http://www.meuser-architekten.de). The catalogue will be published by DOM publishing house.
