Francis Cape

Murray Guy Gallery, New York

Murray Guy is pleased to announce the second solo exhibition of work by Francis Cape. Measuring over ten by twenty feet and covering an entire wall of the gallery, this is his most complex sculptural installation to date. The disparity between the appearance of permanency in the sculpture and the transitory nature of the exhibition - the work will be destroyed at the end of the show - demonstrates that the meaning is not inherent to the object but to our interaction with it.

Cape's language is the vernacular of domestic architecture, particularly that of Britain where he grew up. Upon moving to the United States, he studied structures by American artisans in an attempt to encourage a local audience to make connections between familiar traditional constructions and minimal painting and sculpture.

Occupying an undefined area between art object and utilitarian object, the works tend either to be viewed from the perspective of a museum reconstruction - as an archetype or replica - or they are overlooked entirely.

If, because it is not seen, the referent becomes redundant, Cape is no longer tied to pre-existing models. He can invent an environment, create an improbable place. The drawings give an indication of how these spaces might look. The austerity and precision of his earlier line drawings in ink has given way to more animated, free-hand, pencil drawings.

Cape ambles from one idea to another and furnishes his odd interiors with curious groupings of often incongruous constructions.
