Heinrich Heidersberger occupies a unique position in the history of German photography. His oeuvre reflects a wide range of influences and artistic encounters, which he combined in an incomparable manner.

Heidersberger has few predecessors – Herbert List and Otto Umbehr (who called himself Umbo) were the only photographers working in a similar vein in the 1930s; some of his contemporaries created comparable bodies of work while in exile. Despite numerous didactic publications on his work, Heidersberger has no true successors. The fact that his photographic images are absolutely unmistakable testifies to his singular vision, above all within the scope of a medium oriented towards reproduction.

This exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg is being presented as part of the celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the City of Wolfsburg. Around 170 photographs from all areas of Heidersberger’s activity will be on show. A reprint of the photobook “Bilder einer jungen Stadt”, originally released in 1963 to mark the city’s 25th anniversary, will be published to accompany the exhibition.

The exhibition has been organized in cooperation with the Heidersberger Institute.
