Concrete Hermit is pleased to present ‘Revolution Deformation’, the first U.K. solo show by Fons Schiedon, an exhibition of original paintings displayed alongside prints and animation.

Central to Schiedon’s work is the figure of Jesus, not the Son of God, but a small mouse-like cartoon character previously dubbed by Schiedon as ‘Badboy Lensflare – the albino in a wheelchair’. He explains: ‘For a long time there has been one figure popping up in my work; whenever there was a fanzine spread to fill, a sticker to make or simply an unattended moment he would be there.’

Previously the character of Jesus had not strayed far from the traditional cartoon/character design, the style of which Schiedon is already well known for; with his history as a designer and animator for Nickelodeon, MTV Asia and Submarinechannel and his characters frequently appearing in books and international conferences. You might expect his work to stay comfortably in that bracket of design/animation, but instead it takes a much more interesting path.

The character is removed from the traditions of modern animation and projected into the traditional medium of painting on canvas. Schiedon stretches and distorts the character until it is hardly recognisable – the images becoming almost expressionistic as the character is twisted and pulled. He says, ‘The character Jesus is an anamorphic figure that lends itself to the projection of ideas, without losing it’s features.’

The story of Jesus is further explored in the exhibition catalogue, which details the characters journey to abstraction. A process neatly described by the shows title: Revolution Deformation.
