Mixed Media
An exhibition of exciting new works by Debra Priestly, innovative mixed-media pieces that probe family and social history through digital photography and paint on wood panel, will open at the June Kelly Gallery on March 8. The exhibition will
continue through April 2.
Priestly says her exhibition, entitled Preserves, is about "ancestral knowledge, cultural heritage and the memories fostered
by common rituals and objects." She combines family and historical photographs and her grandmother's Mason jars in a
painterly context to convey her powerful message.
In doing so," says art writer Franklin Sirmans in an essay in the exhibition catalogue, "she evokes the myriad ways in which
we see, sense and feel the mysteries of life."
Sirmans notes that Priestly has been using the computer as a tool in her work for some time, "and now the hypertextual
possibilities have come to the fore directly."
Ostensibly paintings," he writes, "these works are imaginative forms of layered information - hinges between the literal and
metaphorical - synthesizing elements of paint and photography into a unique form of collage that furthers the communicative
power of her narratives."
Sirmans concludes: "Hers is a shared American story told with complexity and nuance, from the most intimate recesses to
the wide, wide world."
Priestly, a native of Springfield, Ohio, lives and works in New York City. She holds a BFA from Ohio State University and an
MFA from Pratt Institute.
Her work has been shown in many one-person and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. Priestly is
represented in the collections of The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, Ohio State University, The Atlanta Life
Insurance Company, AT&T and in many private collections.
