This provocative exhibition reveals introspective discoveries made during
Kirchner's
two-year experimentation with visual emblems of authority in Washington,
DC - such
as the Washington Monument, the American flag, and the dollar bill. By
manipulating
and re-contextualizing these iconic forms, Kirchner challenges viewers to
reassess the
roles of cultural symbols as the bearers of values he asserts are grounded
in "profound materialism."
+ there will be a reception for the artist Friday, April 5th: 6-8pm.
"I have been systematically destroying images of myself in a vain attempt to fade away into a seam
in time and relinquish a sick and disintegrating system. No core credo of latent distractions can
assure me of an existence based on mutual contradictions further endangered by number. I don’t
want to be distracted any longer.
If I somehow find my focus amid the ceaseless allusions, the references to what has passed, then
even icons of subsumed mystical form float between earth and sky and lose their predestined link to
what is known and expected. Free from form, basic elements suspended in an ever-expanding sky
converge in light and dissolve our presumptions of meaning. There is only the sound of the wind,
our kinship in time, the forgiving symphony.
There is a sympathy for the symbols that instruct culture, in the profound materialism that Entertains
Us To Death and leads us brutally forward in the fucking rat race to consume as if by right. In this
simple neglect of simple dignities, no technological pathology will free us of anything but the
circumspection needed to heal. I will ultimately measure my success by how little I leave behind."
