Maison Martin Margiela

Cite' de l'Architecture & du Patrimoine, Paris

Elle decoration suite

comunicato stampa

For the second year running, the Cité de l’architecture & du patrimoine is welcoming the magazine “ELLE décoration” to revive the former apartment of Jacques Carlu, architect of the palais Chaillot in the 1930s. After Christian Lacroix, the Cité and “ELLE have given carte blanche to maison martin margiela for the interior work on this exceptional 220 m2 apartment located opposite the Eiffel tower that overlooks all of Paris from its terrace.

The intervention of Maison Martin Margiela in the suite goes beyond simple deco¬ration, it seeks to revive the place, in space and time. Time that stops after a party and leaves only disorder. So that this place tells a story, rekindles curiosity and stimulates visitor’s imagi¬nation, who will become the witnesses of a scene in someone’s life and the traces left by time and movement. Here the codes, themes and universe of the Maison mix (whites, silver, trompe l’oeil, cotton covers, the traces of time). Its values are also apparent (irony, shif¬ted use, deconstruction), values which the Maison never ceases to interpret in its creative expression, through clothing or the universes it develops.

You enter through a long hall, silver from floor to ceiling, prelude to the party taking place in the rest of the apartment. Walls are draped in silver curtains, a mir¬ror ceiling extends to the whole length and reflects the mirror effect plastic floor.
The first room shows the preparations for a party: precious paintings have been removed, furniture has been moved out of the way – in the middle of the room – and covered with cotton sheets to protect them.

The party room has been left as is: televisions are on, the remains of empty bottles and glasses pile up on the café tables, chairs are still stacked and music haunts the piano that is still playing. The perspective created by the trompe l’oeil parquet print carpet, the stair case, the black and white photocopies of the walls and ceiling lends an anamorphic dimension to the space.

The adjacent terrace is covered in white grass, the “elephant foot” stools have welcomed those who enjoyed the view.
A small padded room is decorated only with a pair of ice Tabi shoes on show in a glass-fronted fridge. This room could be used to host temporary exhibitions by young artists invited by the Maison.

The visit ends with the banquet room, also left as is, where the echoes of conver¬sations continue to resonate. Confetti covers the ground, the guests’ table is still layed: crockery, chandeliers and girandolas are frozen and the buffet is still dec¬ked out in champagne buckets, ice cubes and dishes. The walls and the ceiling are covered in trompe l’oeil photocopies showing an old Haussman apartment decorated with moldings and pastries.
Here, the party is over, but it carries on elsewhere…

IKEA, patron of the ELLE Décoration Suite by Maison Martin Margiela.
IKEA has become a major player in international design. Being patron of this installation brilliantly demonstrates this. It is a proof of IKEA’s uncompromising approach for several decades. The three dimensions of design (form, function and price) are grouped together in the creations put forward by IKEA, have been applauded by several generations as well as the fashion and interior design world. Demanding without being elitist, unifying without falling prey to the banal, IKEA seduces an ever wider public and demonstates that modernity is made of a mix in genres.
The ELLE Décoration Suite has also received support from the following companies: Alti Miroiterie, Enia Carpet, Gatti, Philips, Tarkett, Utram and Vitra.
