In the former launderette on the Saint-Denis Square, Charlotte Marchand & Frederic
Penelle present an installation entitled Sweet Memories which invites us to revive
the exultation, sometimes cruel, of our own childhood.
A window for the emerging creation
The project originates from the collaboration between Wiels and the non-profit
association Atrium, in charge of the development of the commercial district on the
St-Denis square. While Wiels presents and promotes the contemporary creation, Atrium
contributes to the dynamic development of commercial neighborhoods in Brussels.
Together, they decided to give a second life to Speedy Wash: an abandonned
launderette from the sixties located on the Saint-Denis Square in the heart of
Forest has been turned into a public exhibition space...
Speedy Wash is appropriated by two artists simultaneously. The first space allows
the presentation of an installation, while the other side invites bidimensional
works (painting, collage drawing…). The objective is to confront two different
interventions which dialog and answer each other. The two artists decide themselves
to work together and express the affinities between their respective practices. The
board, visible from the far end of the square, attracts passersby. When approaching,
they discover the installation in the space next door and they are invited to
imagine the relationships between the two artworks.
In parallel, Belgian artist Filip van Dingenen has created a little sculpture that
represents the old logo of the launderette: a strange figurine with lifted arms. At
each opening, this sculpture is being handed over to the shopkeepers in the area,
who are asked to house the sculpture in their shop window until the next exhibition.
The neighbors recognise the sculpture in the different stores they go shopping The
journey of this 'mascot' is an opportunity to intrigue passersby and invite
shopkeepers to participate to the project. The mascot thus plays a connecting role
between the small businesses, the inhabitants and the art world.
