The second presentation of the MMK Collection, and it will include a selection of Pop Art and Minimalist masterpieces, will focus on American and European Concept Art from 1966 to the present. In the context of Hanne Darboven’s 900-page written record Ein Jahrhundert – Johann Wolfgang von Goethe gewidmet, which has been part of the MMK Collection ever since the museum opened, we are for the first time presenting her musical piece opus 25, which she transformed into a minimalist composition in 1988 by transcribing the pure numerals of the former work into a score.

Other key artworks in the Collection, such as On Kawara’s series of Today Paintings and Lawrence Weiner’s wall piece STONES FOUND AND BROKEN SOMETIMES IN THE FUTURE correspond to new John Baldessari works we have acquired, such as the early films 6 Colorful Inside Jobs or Tony Conrad’s Yellow Movies dating from 1973.

The exhibition of conceptual art will be rounded out by current works by a younger generation of artists such as Ai Wei Wei, Francis Alÿs or Jeroen de Rijke/Willem de Rooij, who all take up the lineage of Concept Art and advance it. The most prominent new acquisitions include the expansive ...rinsed with mercury... created by British artist Cerith Wyn Evans in 2009, which recreated in a 25-meter-long strip of glowing neon letters a poem by James Merrill (1926-1995). The MMK is thus building a bridge spanning more than 40 years of international, conceptual art, highlighting many of its different facets in the process.
