With ART COLOGNE, Germany's most important art fair is held each year. Since its founding in 1967, the Cologne
International Art Fair has been the flagship for all international art fairs, and in terms of its composition and atmosphere,
is unique in the world. This status as well as the quality and balance of its range are maintained by an international
selection committee. The number of participants, which is restricted to about 260 internationally renowned galleries,
guarantees a transparent structure, but at the same time, offers a comprehensive
overview of the 20th century art scene - from the Classical Moderns up to the latest
art productions. Apart from the classics, the focal points of the range are 60's, 70's,
80's and 90's art.
Integrated into the exhibition area of KölnMesse GmbH's Rhineside Halls is the Köln
Skulptur sector. In this presentation setting, which is unique worldwide, admission is
exclusively limited to three-dimensional objects. This year, a number of young,
up-and-coming artists will participate in the international sponsorship programme supported by the Federal Ministry of
the Interior, the City of Cologne and KölnMesse. The young galleries, which at the
invitation of a jury of experts, are able to participate at the fair thanks to sponsorship
by the Stadtsparkasse Cologne's Culture Foundation (Stiftung Kultur), will also form
their own section within the event. Each year, ART COLOGNE registers around 70,000
visitors.

Critics Symposium at ART Cologne 2002
The Power of Opinion and the Use of Media.
Investigating Art Criticism
November 1st /2nd / Rheinhallen / KölnMesse
from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
International Symposium / Art Cologne 2002 [Oct 30th to Nov 3th, 2002]
With the progressive removal of boundaries from the concept of art, there
has been an expansion in the so-called art business, in connection with
which the function of the critic as a multiplier and transmitter of
information has become a crucial interface. The state of the economy, and
the superfluity of contemporary exhibitions make the reflection of these
in the media a conditio sine qua non. Lately exhibitions have appeared to
be designed more for the press than for the public.
Time to pause and take thought. The critic has always been a mighty
authority. Is he today the secret éminence grise of the business, not just
throwing out information but promoting - or even trashing - careers ? One
who spins mightily along with the carousel of vanities, the more so as now
new forms of cooperation between culture and industry have also come
about, in which the so-called media representative constitutes the crucial
needle's eye of access to the public. How should the new role of the
critic be seen - between curators, competition and capital? And what
strategy can educate the "opposite numbers", the critic's victims -
artists, curators, museums, institutions and sponsors? This symposium aims
at a historical stock-taking, a self-critical reflection on the role of
the international art criticism, in a dialogue of "perpetrators" and
"victims".
