More up-to-date, ever more youthful but a little later in the year:
the highlight for the art market in the spring promises to be
breathtaking
For the first time, the date for this art fair is now at the end of
May, to coincide with Manifesta 4
Curator's Choice presents contemporary art from Moscow
Art Frankfurt, the most important art fair in the spring, will this year be
presenting itself in an even more up-to-date and youthful fashion. Out of a
total of 700 applications, the trade fair management team has selected 190
international galleries to participate in the event, of which 30 are
galleries
that can be seen at an art fair for the very first time. From 26th to 30th
May
2002, all of these galleries will be offering for sale work by over 2,000
artists
on the upper level of the most modern exhibition hall in the whole of Europe,
namely Hall 3 on the Frankfurt Fairground. At 18,000 square metres, the
exhibition space available in Hall 3.1 represents an area the size of both
floor
levels of Hall 1, the hall where Art Frankfurt has taken place for the past
13
years.
Despite the change in surroundings, the focal points in the programme of
events for this trade fair will remain the same: in the front half of the
hall,
visitors will find those galleries exhibiting collections that are partly
established and partly contemporary under the slogan "Art from 1960". The
other half of the hall will be featuring galleries that have on display the
most
modern art in the "New Attitudes" exhibit category. So-called "Projects" will
be a new addition to the show, involving special stands that Art Frankfurt is
offering at special terms. Such stands will have won the right to a "first
viewing" and will display unusual art in a professional setting, casting our
eyes
ever forwards. As part of these projects, around 40 galleries will be
exhibiting
installation art and works by young artists that have up until now never been
seen at a trade fair. And so, for example, the Martina Detterer Gallery from
Frankfurt will be exhibiting a stand completely occupied by an installation
by
the artist couple Pridgar + Jurt. The Ursula Walbröl Gallery from Stuttgart
will
be awarding the painter Julia Schmidt her trade fair debut in showing her
large-format, naturalistic oil paintings. These project stands will be seen
as
highlights throughout the entire space of Hall 3.1.
The date for the trade fair is new too: Art Frankfurt 2002 will take place at
the end of May, a month later than usual. This change has come about
because the City of Frankfurt has been successful in its bid to bring the
touring Manifesta biennial festival to the metropolis on the Main and the
organisers of Manifesta 4 and Art Frankfurt have coordinated their event
opening dates accordingly. Art collectors and those with an interest in art
from all corners of the world will thereby get the opportunity to visit two
highlights in the contemporary art calendar at one fell swoop. On top of
this,
Art Frankfurt itself is one of the three main sponsors of Manifesta 4
The "Curator's Choice" exhibition series introduced at Art Frankfurt last
year will this year be casting our eyes in an easterly direction, presenting
contemporary art from Moscow. The aim of "Curator's Choice" is to give
young curators and critics the opportunity to display their quite personal
views on current art production in the form of a non-commercial exhibition.
Visitors will thus be given an insight into scenes in each respective country
that have not yet been discovered by the wider international world.
The euro 13,000 Adam Elsheimer Prize for Art Societies will be awarded to
the Frankfurt Art Society (Frankfurter Kunstverein) on 25th May 2002 as part
of the Art Frankfurt opening ceremony. In handing over this award, Art
Frankfurt is recognising the passionate work achieved by this art society and
the commitment shown by its director, Nicolaus Schafhausen.
