The New Art Gallery Walsall is delighted to present a new exhibition of work by artist Gavin Turk, his first major British solo show since The Stuff Show at the South London Gallery in 1998. The exhibition combines brand new work with some key works from Gavin's back catalogue.

Gavin Turk's work is characterised by an irreverent plundering of the history of art and popular culture to create witty and provocative works that explore and challenge notions of authenticity, originality, identity and value.

New work on show will include Nomad, a beautifully crafted painted bronze sculpture of someone in a sleeping bag. There is an incredible tension between the obvious pathos of the imagery and the beauty of the object as sculpture with its sensuous curves and meticulous attention to detail. After it was made, Gavin put the sculpture on the street for the day; in a shop doorway across from his Charing Cross Road studio where he was able to watch the largely apathetic responses of passers-by.

From its doorway, the sculpture unwittingly collected a pile of copper coins. This has inspired another new work Heads!, an oversized copper coin with an iconic portrait of the Queen. In the context of the Golden Jubilee the work could be seen as a celebration of national identity. However, it also raises questions about value. Whilst currency might be regarded as a thing of value, coins of such a minimal denomination are often discarded as worthless.

Amongst the works to be included in the exhibition are the grandiose Unoriginal Signature a nine metre long Yves Klein Blue sponge
signature, Ouevre a giant fibreglass egg and Pimp a painted steel skip.

A range of resource material will be available including an audio guide, giving visitors a personal tour of the exhibition by Gavin himself. There is also a programme of talks around the exhibition. The exhibition will be accompanied by a publication which will be available in early July and has been supported by the Henry Moore Foundation. The publication retails at £20 but will have a special exhibition price of £10. Advance orders can be made at the Gallery Shop.

New Art Gallery Walsall - What's On guide June-Sept 2002

Exhibitions:

Copper Jubilee by Gavin Turk
28 June - 1 September

Gavin Turk's sculpture is characterised by an irreverent plundering of the history of art, popular culture and current affairs to create witty and provocative works that explore and challenge notions of authenticity, originality, identity and value.

Copper Jubilee is Gavin Turk's first major British solo show since 1998. New works include Nomad, a beautifully crafted painted bronze sculpture of a shrouded figure hidden in the confines of a dirty sleeping bag and Oeuvre, a large fibreglass egg. The exhibition also features key works from Gavin's back catalogue, selected by Gavin himself in association with Deborah Robinson, Acting Director, such as Unoriginal Signature, Gavin's own signature 9 metres long, made of steel. Audio guides will be available, allowing visitors the opportunity for a personal tour of the exhibition by Gavin himself.

Rural Walsall
28 June - 1 September

Using paintings, prints and drawings from the Gallery's collections, Rural Walsall aims to challenge the popular perception of the Borough as purely an industrial area with factories and pollution. The show contemplates the destruction of Walsall's medieval oak forests and questions the nature of 'rural tranquillity' through twentieth century artists' visions of the bustling canal networks. In addition to historic material the exhibition features maps, photographs and multimedia works. Artists Jo Roberts and Roger Westwood have been commissioned to make new work responding to the historical pictures and Walsall's changing scenery.

To complement Rural Walsall, the Countryside Ranger Service has created a new guided walk from the Gallery along the canals to Reedswood Park and Pouk Hill. The walk is about 3 miles long. Pick up a free guide in the exhibition.

Coming of Age
20 September-24 November
Coming of Age brings together twentieth century works from Tate collections which deal with the process of growing older: with personal change and transition, and with memory, reminiscence and self-knowledge. All the works are by women, exploring life experiences from a distinctively female perspective. Using diverse means of expression, the works reflect the century's radical changes in artistic practice. Yet beneath seemingly disparate portrayals of similar themes runs a common vein of candid, humorous and sometimes provocative observation.
The exhibition also charts the changing status of women artists within Tate Collections, from a time when they were sparsely represented to the more balanced situation today. In that sense, too, this is an exhibition about 'coming of age'.
Artists featured include Gwen John, Dod Proctor, Vanessa Bell, Nancy Spero, Louise Bourgeois, Paula Rego, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Sherrie Levine, Rineke Dijkstra and Tracey Moffat.

Jonathan Callan
13 December - 26 January 2003

Colouring Landscapes
20 April - 7 July
Pupils from three special schools in Walsall, Mary Elliot, Jane Lane and Castle School have used the landscape pictures in the Garman Ryan Collection as a source of inspiration for a joint project. The Children's work offers a unique insight into the paintings and drawings in the Collection and reveals the impressive creative talents and imagination of the young artists.

From Tate to Walsall: The Visitation by Jacob Epstein
14 May - 24 November
This major sculpture by Jacob Epstein of a pregnant woman is on loan to The New Art Gallery through the Tate Partnership Scheme. At the time of its creation in 1926, Kathleen Garman was pregnant with Epstein's daughter and themes of fertility and sexuality are woven into this figure. He felt it expressed 'a humility so profound as to shame the beholder who comes to my sculpture expecting rhetoric or splendour of gesture.'

Fire Drawings
13 July - 24 November
Last autumn thirty young people from Walsall and Sandwell worked with artists from Walk the Plank to create massive fire drawings which were burnt at the closing ceremony of Walsall Illuminations. The drawings were inspired by Garman Ryan artworks and show the power of simple lines. Together they formed the largest ever collection of fire drawings and were captured by photographer Martin Brent.
