Announcing An Exhibition of Proposals for a Socialist
Colony, an exhibition of artists’ works that contribute to the fruitful paradoxes residing in
the common quest for individual freedom. Mounted in Houston, Texas, the exhibition is
set against a backdrop of the state’s historical independence from Mexico and the United
States, and has been developed under the premise that the land on which SKYDIVE
gallery stands is available for claim by any group who wishes to establish a socialist
colony on the property.
An Exhibition of Proposals for a Socialist Colony is informed by
a regional libertarian spirit and is built from proposals for systems, tools, collective
processes, social and legal contracts, and contradictions of implementation. In turn, these
proposals build on local civic laws to designate a global zone for debate regarding the
distinctions between personal necessity and public life. The artists and curators engaged
in a collaborative process to produce the exhibition, highlighting early Texas Socialist
history and examining the roles played by self-organization in the development of social
and legal contracts.
Participating artists and works include BAW, N55, Aharon, Amy Balkin, Zanny Begg,
