CCA Andratx, Majorca

Paradise Lost - Holidays In Hell: a group show. "One aspect of the 'hell' an artist has to go through today is to find a pregnant position in the jungle of all the coexisting valid disciplines of art. (...) Every artist in this exhibition should be seen in an own perspective to stay with the picture" (Saskia Draxler and Christian Nagel). 'The Berlin Box' brings together works on paper by 62 significant younger Berlin-based artists, offering an unusual insight into the current artistic production and flow in the city. The project surprises the visitor with a broad variety of techniques, methods and styles. Curated by Friederike Nymphius

“Paradise Lost – Holidays In Hell” is an exhibition with artists who we believe to be of meaning for the position that art takes in our time’s feeling and thinking.

“Contemporary Art” as a common expression has become a hybrid and dazzling potpourri of artistic concepts, some as “old” as painting and sculpture, others as “new” as concept art, video art, critical narration, installation... There is no current avantgarde which would claim an existence free of references and preconditions and which wouldn’t have to define itself in relation to the by now historical art forms and strategies of the 20st century. Avantgarde only exists as post-avantgarde and as such is divided in various “disciplines”.

That one concept of “art” which came up in Europe during Enlightenment and awarded what from then on was seen as “art”
with a levitating superior quality, diverged into different “arts” again – maybe at the cost of its unspeakable powers. One aspect of the “hell” an artist has to go through today is to find a pregnant position in the jungle of all the coexisting valid disciplines of art. We do not suggest a certain reading of the exhibition. There is no “curatorial concept”. Every artist in this exhibition should be seen in an own perspective – to stay with the picture - in her or his own “hell”...
