The Substation brings back the highly successful Short Shorts Film Festival

After its very successful Singapore premiere at The Substation last year, Short Shorts Film Festival is back again at Singapore's first multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural contemporary arts centre from the 2 to 4 July with a special selection of 13 highlights from the festival of short films in Japan.

Touted as the number one short film festival in Japan, the Short Shorts Film Festival showcases a selected group of highly regarded and entertaining short films. The festival's good reputation has managed to garner it the support from influential filmmakers such as George Lucas (of the "Star Wars" trilogy fame) and Martin Scorcese (of "The Godfather" fame).

Since its beginning in 1999, the Short Shorts Film Festival has made its presence felt in Japan, touring five cities over a one month period, including Tokyo and Osaka. Each year, the festival attracts over 20,000 attendees from all across Japan.

The festival gives new filmmakers a forum to have their works featured in major venues and to travel. In 2001, the festival premiered in Singapore at The Substation - its first time outside Japan.

The Short Shorts Film Festival in Singapore is presented in association with The Substation's Moving Images Programme and is kindly sponsored by the Singapore Film Commission.

Tickets are at $5 and $4 (concession and Friends of The Substation price), and are available at The Substation's Box Office on weekdays from 4 - 8pm, or call Tel: 63377800 for ticketing information.

About Short Shorts
Short Shorts is a division of Pacific Voice, with offices in Tokyo, Japan and Santa Monica, California, USA. It creates and produces short film festivals and broadcasts for TV Tokyo, All Nippon Airways and Pay-Per-View. The Short Shorts Film Festival, founded by Japanese actor Tetsuya Bessho and American journalist and television reporter Douglas Williams, was started by Bessho and Williams with the intention of introducing the short film genre to the Japanese public, as well as to encourage the growth of short filmmaking in Japan.

About The Substation Ltd
Founded in 1990, The Substation, a non-profit organisation, is Singapore's first multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural centre for contemporary arts in Singapore. A 'Home For The Arts', The Substation is the "birthplace" of many artists and where one can be creative and broaden his/her thinking space. The Substation encourages artists to take risks and not be afraid to fail. It is a home where people perform, exhibit, experiment, teach, learn and create. Over the years, it has staged more than 1,000 events for some 250,000 people from all walks of life. The Substation is also plugged into a network of international arts organisations to encourage cross-fertilisation of ideas and the facilitation of understanding between the various cultures.

The Substation initiates and produces its own arts events. These annual events are:
- DanceSpace - experimental and original dance
- New Criteria - contemporary visual arts
- The Substation Sessions - formerly MusicSpace; a mixture of spoken word and music events
- SeptFest - a month-long arts festival including an annual arts conference
- Forum for the Arts - series of talks by specialists
- Theatre Fest - experimental work in theatre and drama
- Moving Images - screenings and talks on film art

In November 2001, The Substation launched Buds Youth Theatre, part of its Education and Outreach programme.

The Substation also adopts one or two promising artists in any discipline as Artists-In-Residence and provides them with logistical and financial support, as well as presents their works.

In addition, The Substation offers courses on drama, dance, photography, yoga, and traditional and contemporary arts appreciation. It also rents out its various facilities - theatre, gallery, garden, dance studio and rooms - to the public and arts groups.
