Actions in the contest of the series of Monastic Residency by 2010 artist Theaster Gates

This event is one in a series of Monastic Residency organized by 2010 artist Theaster Gates, who will collaborate with academics, artists, and street musicians in the Museum's Sculpture Court throughout the duration of the Whitney Biennial. Torkwase Dyson is a visual artist based in New York. Torkwase Dyson's primary action will be to reconstruct the ware boards of Gates's installation Cosmology of Yard, using the raw material as fodder for her own new works. The artist will invite friends to the space to critique and photograph; over the course of her residency, authorship is challenged as the material sheds its status as a personal object.
