Royal Rumble. Peter Lloyds screen-printed portraits feature invented masked wrestlers based on the Mexican model, exploring popular notions of identity, escapism and the power of display. Royal Rumble brings together two series of Peter Lloyds portraits in a head to head for the first time, while new work explores character interaction and the complicated dynamics of group scenes.
Royal Rumble
Mexicos masked wrestlers are national heroes who adopt outlandish
theatrical personalities, and hide their true identities behind super-hero
masks and lavish costumes. Peter Lloyd first encountered the subject of
his works as a student while on a scholarship to Mexico. Originally making
the trip to see the Day of the Dead celebration he found the contempo
rary and functioning urban folklore he was looking for in a most
unexpected location - Lucha Libra (free fighting).
Each wrestler had a set of specific personas. Each was constructed
around a theme and it seemed that any aspect of Mexican culture, high or
low, ancient or modern, was fair game. One wrestler had based his
character around fast food and paraded around the arena with a cartoon
style American hot dog emblem stitched onto his mask. Another drew the
inspiration for his elaborate costume from the ancient Mexican tribes,
covering his face in gold lamé and feathers he called himself The
Aztec.
Wrestling is extremely popular in Mexico and its most successful exponents
wield enormous cultural and even political influence.
Peter Lloyds screen-printed portraits feature invented masked wrestlers
based on the Mexican model, exploring popular notions of identity,
escapism and the power of display. Each print is a riot of glossy colour
with flamboyant fur, glitter and sequins. Royal Rumble brings together two
series of Peter Lloyds portraits in a head to head for the first
time, while new work explores character interaction and the complicated
dynamics of group scenes.
Peter Lloyd graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2000, winning the
Augustus Martin prize as best print-maker of his year. He lives and works
in Winchester and is represented by Mark Adams Fine Art, London.
