expo zéro is an exhibition project without any works: no photographs, no sculptures, no installations or videos. Zero things, not one stable object. But artists, areas occupied by the gestures, projects, bodies, stories, dances which everyone will choose to imagine. From this principle, ten personalities (artists, architects, theorists...) will be invited in residence to the Garage. They will afterwards present to the visitors their own visions, subjective and utopian, of what a "dancing museum" could be.
A kind of "think tank" with moving objectives, expo zéro wishes to invite art in its most volatile manifestations. Through analysis, description, performance, movements and ideas which each "guide-artist" will develop with the audience, the geography, will be drawn of this expanding territory.
SPRINGDANCE 2010 to open with a double bill by Hans van Manen and Mathilde Monnier
From 16 to 26 April 2010, the 26th edition of SPRINGDANCE will take place in Utrecht.
On Saturday 17 April the festival will see its official opening: we will be presenting
both Hans van Manen's choreography Live, performed by the Dutch National Ballet, and
the new performance Pavlova 3'23'' by French choreographer Mathilde Monnier at the
Stadsschouwburg Utrecht.
SPRINGDANCE 2010: Live
In 1979 – it will be 31 years ago next April! – there was a bit of a palace revolution in Dutch
dance. It took place during the Holland Festival where Van Manen had a ballerina perform live on
the stage while filming her at the same time. The images were projected onto a large video
screen on the stage. With Live, Van Manen was the first to link the spectator's observation and
the eye of the camera. For Bettina Masuch, artistic director at Springdance, Live has been one of
her inspirations in arranging this year's programme. Masuch: "A lot has changed since then. We
have grown accustomed to the use of new media. The digital culture is now firmly embedded in
both cultural and day-to-day life in our (Western) societies. Technology has become part of the
culture, and virtual worlds have become intertwined with 'real' life. Digital information and
communication technology offer us a different and new look at the human body and
contemporary dance".
We will be linking the revolution of the past with a new look at dance in the performance
Pavlova 3'23" by Mathilde Monnier. In 2009, French choreographer Mathilde Monnier created
Pavlova 3'23", taking the ballerina's physicality as her starting point as well. The performance is
based on Fokine's mythical solo The Dying Swan which he created for the famous dancer Anna
Pavlova in 1907. By putting nine dancers on the stage, Mathilde Monnier offers a new perspective
on the ballerina for 2009. Whereas Van Manen used technology to duplicate the image of the
ballerina, Monnier duplicates The Dying Swan in the different bodies of her nine male and female
dancers.
Visitors to SPRINGDANCE can expect a range of pioneering and experimental performances.
SPRINGDANCE 2010 is an exploration of the meaning of 'live and physical presence' and of dance
within a media culture. How authentic is a dancing body today?
