Main Room

Flávio de Carvalho
curated by Rui Moreira Leite

The Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo is bringing back to light many aspects of the work of one of the most innovative artists of his time in this retrospective, that brings about sixty works and approximately 30 other items – among photographs, essays and documents attesting Flávio de Carvalho's (1899-1973) innovative production.

The main piece is his architectural design ranked among the first places in a contest promoted by the City of São Paulo in 1934 in order to choose the second Viaduto do Chá overpass, which was inaugurated in 1938. The view from the Anahangabaú valley, until now unknown to the public, is the opening piece of the show, set on the first large exhibition panel at the entrance of the exhibition room.

Flávio de Carvalho's mind was years ahead of his time. Multimedia and provocative, he got involved with many different artistic languages, such as architecture, painting, sculpture, performance, happening, set decoration, and theater in order to transcend the narrow social values that prevailed in São Paulo, and more generally speaking, in Brazil at the time. His simultaneous degrees in Engineering and Painting, acquired in England (Durham University, Newcastle upon Tyne), granted him an aesthetic notion that was then unusual in Brazil, and a wide range of interests that led him to experiment with art in an innovative way, most of all for his contemporaries in Brazil.

The nude man's city

curated by Inti Guerrero

The exhibition puts together twelve pieces among photographs, videos, posters and 16 mm films, created by both Brazilian and international artists belonging to various generations, as well as materials from the Secos & Molhados band and singer Ney Matogrosso.

The curator used as primary source a lecture about the urban utopia idealized by Flavio de Carvalho presented in 1930, during the IV Congresso Panamericano de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (Rio de Janeiro), in which he took part as representative of the Brazilian Anthropophagic group. According to de Carvalho, the urbanism of the future would develop a kind of city suitable to the nude man, that is, an individual who would move away ("denuded") from his cultural body, or, in de Carvalho's own words, a man "without god, without property, without matrimony... and without scholastic taboos, free for reasoning and thought."

Resident DJ – 2nd edition
curated by Alexandre Herchcovitch

In the first semester of this year, the fashion designer takes charge of the projetct, which invites artists, musicians, DJs and personalities to compose soundworks and soundtracks to all public spaces of the museum. He has created a score filled with international big hits by names as Barry Manillow, Bonnie Tyler and Cascatinha & Inhana, in order to break the silence of the white cube.

New façade by OsGemeos

In an initiative aimed to the intensification of the contact between its building and the environment, as well the Parque do Ibirapuera's public (composed mostly by skaters and teenagers), MAM-SP have acquired a mural painting by the twin brothers, which are two of the most internationally famous street artists of the present time. Permanently installed on MAM's façade, the huge painting evokes the onirical universe of the artists. The artwork was gifted by Credit Suisse.
