More than 900 artists and 90 galleries of 20 countries together in the most important Art Fair in Mexico and Latin America. Adriano Pedrosa will present ZONAMACO® SUR, featuring solo projects from the Southern Hemisphere. During the Fair, there will be a grand number of activities as openings, expositions and private events that will make of Mexico City a unique attraction center for tourism and arts.
The final countdown has begun for the opening of ZONAMACO® MÉXICO ARTE CONTEMPORÁNEO that will take place on April 14th-18th, 2010 at Centro Banamex, Hall D.
This year the Art Fair will count with 90 galleries of 20 countries (Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, England and Mexico among others). Those galleries were chosen from a meticulous selection process made by the Selection Committee who evaluates the galleries for their artists and artwork.
The galleries that form the Committee are: Nara Roesler from Brazil; Krinzinger Gallerie from Austria; Travesía Cuatro from Spain; De la Barra Gallery from England and OMR from México.
This year the fair will feature the special project Z ONAMACO® SUR, led by art curator Adriano Pedrosa, which will present 20 projects by emerging artists from the southern hemisphere underrepresented in the Mexican market. Some of the invited artists are: Jorge Macchi de Galerie Peter Kilchmann de Suiza, Nader Ahriman de Krinzinger Galerie de Austria, y Johanna Calle de Galería Casas Riegner de Colombia, among others. Zelik Garcia, director of ZONAMACO® commented "the growth of this project seeks to position and make known the works of various artists within the international market."
The Fair will be open on April 14th at 17:00 hrs. From the beginning the visitors could get involved in the art world which will give them the opportunity to get in touch with different disciplines of contemporary art as painting, sculpture, drawing, photography and video among others. With all this, we can reach the main objective of the Fair.
“Our goal in this Fair is to receive over 25,000 visitors: therefore, we want to invite you to be attentive to the various projects we will be carrying out in order to promote and diffuse ZONAMACO® 10 and the activities we will carry out within this fair”, García pointed out.
During the Fair a whole program of activities will take place including award ceremonies as “Perrier en ZONAMACO®, Artista Emergente Chilango en ZONAMACO, and el Premio Tequila Centenario en ZONAMACO®”, all with the purpose of increasing the production, distribution and commercialization of contemporary art.
The Fair is also collaborating with “Aprendiendo a través del arte”, which is a program that developed abilities in children based in the meaning of “Peace and Love”. This program has the objective of promoting values of nonviolence and equality through a number of workshops.
The workshops will be given by very prestigious plastic artists as Jorge Galavuz, Manuel Reyes, Cecilia Mancera y Loela Galaviz.
In addition, there is a dynamic program of social and cultural activities in different venues of Mexico City such as visits to museums and private collections and exclusive dinners, events and parties that will give a chance to surprise and delight our guests.
ZONAMACO® SUR 2010.
The second edition of Z ONAMACO® SUR, the project room section at ZONAMACO® is once more curated by Adriano Pedrosa, yet has undergone several changes. As a curated section, galleries and artists participate by invitation only.
Our notion of “SUR”, which last year was applied mostly to artists from Latin America, this year has expanded to include artists of Middle Eastern and African backgrounds (Nader Ahriman, Carlos Bunga, and Yonamine). “SUR” is therefore not so much Latin America or South America, let alone the Southern Hemisphere, but a wider, perhaps more imprecise and poetic notion of the margins. Territorial limitations and boundaries are always a curatorial trap (and indeed the most superficial of curatorial criteria), particularly at a time where artists are traveling between North and South. It is for this very reason that the presence of an artist such as Rita McBride, who divides her time between the US and Germany, is so important—she exhibits at ZONAMACO® SUR tapestries that have been produced in Mexico (last year, it was the Italian Luisa Lambri who exhibited “Mexican” photographs).
In this somewhat hazy geographical context, ZONAMACO® SUR maintains its proposal of showcasing younger and mid-career artists, juxtaposing well known artists such as Jorge Macchi to younger ones such as Nicolas Bacal.
We are still keeping ourselves from inviting Mexican galleries to this section, and there is a reasonable argument for that: the galleries from Mexico City who participate at the fair already have two venues during ZONAMACO®: one at the Centro Banamex, in their own stand, and a second in the city, at their own grounds. ZONAMACO® rules are not written in stone, and hopefully in the future we will be to tackle the Mexican scene in an interesting way. For the time being, we have invited the group Tercer1Quinto to participate with a sponsored Project.
ZONAMACO® SUR is now larger in number, with 20 projects (up from 15, last year), and in actual space (at 32m2). If in 2009 the focus was to invite galleries who perhaps would otherwise not participate in ZONAMACO®, creating a stimulus for them to come to the fair, this year we have extended the invitation to certain galleries who have already been participating, giving the opportunity for them to present a solo project. Thus, alongside galleries such as Casas Riegner (Bogotá), A Gentil Carioca (Rio de Janeiro), Luisa Strina (São Paulo) and Alexander and Bonin (New York), who took part in last year’s section for the first time and now are returning, we find veteran ZONAMACO® participants such as Elastic (Malmö), Travesía Cuatro (Madrid), Nara Roesler (São Paulo), Faria Fabricas (New York/Caracas) and Krizinger (Vienna). There are a number of galleries that return to Z ONAMACO® after a few years of absence, such as Graça Brandão (Lisbon) and Ruth Benzacar (Buenos Aires) and Peter Kilchman (Zurich), and some newcomers, too, such as Crevecoeur (Paris), Oficina 1 (Caracas), Cristina Guerra (Lisbon) and Fortes Vilaça (São Paulo).
