I suoi lavori, spesso di grandi dimensioni, sono realizzati con inchiostro su carta tradizionale coreana e utilizzano un linguaggio grafico che la stessa artista ha definito come “pre-scrittura”. Si tratta di una registrazione minuziosa di segni che riuniscono diversi linguaggi: talvolta il flusso grafico si addensa prendendo la forma di onde e maree, altre volte si elettrizza come in un tracciato di un elettrocardiogramma o della registrazione sismografica di un terremoto immaginario, altre volte si rilassa e si addensa nelle note di uno spartito fantastico.

D’altra parte, le fotografie che l’artista presenta, dotate di un linguaggio egualmente fortemente evocativo, ci descrivono la medesima realtà con un nitido realismo.. E’ come se Oan Kyu, allargando la sua prospettiva e distanziandosi dagli oggetti e dalle persone che osserva, abbia deciso di bilanciare la densa ambiguita’ iperdeterminata dei suoi lavori grafici, con la luminosità ad “alta definizione”, ricca di forti contrasti, delle sue foto. Entrambi gli approcci si integrano, testimoniando la profonda percezione dell’artista, la sua grande sensibilità nell’osservare e nel riflettere la vita e sulla vita nell’ampia prospettiva che lo spazio ed il tempo ci danno.

OAN KYU, nata in Corea del Sud vive e lavora tra Seoul e Roma. Ha studiato Arte Visiva in Italia e Corea. Ha insegnato tecniche dell'incisione presso le Università Yeong Nam di Dae Gu e Seong Shin di Seoul. Dopo una lunga esperienza produttiva con le tecniche di xilografia e acquaforte, dalla fine degli anni '80 la sua ricerca indaga sul confine tra pittura segnica e scrittura ermetica, utilizzando inchiostro Muk, macinato a mano, su carta. L'approccio meditativo del suo linguaggio è sviluppato attorno al concetto di 'variazioni minime' e 'wide sense'. Parallelamente si è dedicata con particolare attenzione alla fotografia, trovando nella sintesi delle ombre in bianco e nero dettagli di estrema sottigliezza. Dal 1974 ha tenuto esposizioni in Corea, Italia, Germania, Cina, U.S.A. e Spagna, tra cui 26 mostre personali. Her works, sometimes in a very large size, are based on a china ink on Korean paper technique, and focus on a very detailed description of signs that the artist herself defined as “Earlier than writing”. It is a careful recording of “almost-writing”, conveying different languages: sometimes its flow recalls the shape of waves and tides, sometimes it gets electric like in an ECG or in an imaginary earthquake recording, sometimes this “pre-writing” becomes the notes of a fantastic score.

On the other hand, the photographs that the artist presents show, with an equally powerful language, the same reality with a clear-cut realistic bright definition. It is as if Oan Kyu, widening her distance from the objects and the people she observes, decided to balance the dense hyper determined ambiguity of her graphic work with the high definition images, rich in contrast, of her pictures. Both of them are anyway illustrating the artist’s deep perception, her high sensitivity in watching and reflecting people’s life in the wide perspective that space and time grants us.

Born in South Korea in 1953. After studies in Italy and Korea, her first personal exhibition was held in Seoul in 1975, followed by 26 Solo exhibitions in East Asia, Europe and the U.S.A. During the 1970s, she taught engraving at the Universities of SeongShin in Seoul and YeoungNam in DaeGu. For many years she has dedicated her attention to the techniques of xilography and engraving, in particular to the use of hand ground ink on oriental paper. At the center of her artistic research is the complex rapport between visual art and writing which results in a non- codified communication. At the same time she has also been investigating the fields of photography when the “street signs” is a necessity. She received the 59th Grand Prix of Michetti Foundation Award in 2008, Italy.
