For the opening of Speedy-Wash #8, the artists Francois Martig and Philippe Petitgenet present a concert where seemingly distant sound horizons meet and form a new landscape: both minimal and maximal, ranging from electro to ambient music, their improvised music is created through recordings and sampling of various sound sources.
Philippe Petitgenêt and François Martig are both visual artists, but they use sound as the main medium of their work. Together they create installations and sometimes also performative events.
Since the beginning of their collaboration, they have used popular codes such as tuning and car sound system. Their installation Noise-ette (a fusion of the words "Noise" and "Bal musette") from 2008, for instance, included audio recordings from a tuning festival.
Detractors consider tuning a bad taste hobby only practiced by lower class groups. For its defenders, tuning is a non conformist attitude, which refuses standardized mass production. In any case, WASTEGATES, BOOST CONTROLLER, AIRSCARF, ANTISKID, DSP, DONK STYLE, DRIFT, LOWRIDING, PINSTRIPING, SPINNER, and SUBWOOFER are words with a strong imaginary potential.
For Speedy Wash # 8 Philippe Petitgenêt and François Martig have invented a new methodology: tuning with cardboard. At the dawn of a new decade, which economic and ecological future seems uncertain, the practice of "TUNING CAR-tone" is for the artists a means to both act and dream.
Humorous parody of real tuning? Ecological position or cheaper alternative to the expensive customization of one's car? The interpretation remains open...
