Pictures, Objects, Concepts. From the Collection and the Archives of Herman and Nicole Daled (1966-1978). The brussels-based collectors refuse to perceive art as decoration and to, thereby, exploit it. They approach art in a fundamentally different way: basis for their activities are their relationships and conversations with artists. The collection holds several works by Daniel Buren, Dan Graham, On Kawara, Sol Lewitt, Niele Toroni, Lawrence Weiner, Cy Twombly and many more.
The brussels-based collectors Herman Daled and Nicole Daled refuse to perceive art as decoration and to, thereby, exploit it. They approach art in a fundamentally different way: basis for their activities are their relationships and conversations with artists.
In keeping with the aim of conceptual art that places the intellectual content of a work above its realisation, they consider themselves not collectors but communicators and producers: they provide artists with the opportunity to also realise works outside of established market mechanisms. Their intense engagement with conceptual art, one of the most important movements in recent art history, goes far beyond usual collecting practices.
This is not only apparent in the actual works, but also in the meticulously archived documents containing actions and works. One of the most important influences for Herman and Nicole Daled was Marcel Broodthaers; more than 80 of his works are in their collection. Moreover, the collection holds several works by Daniel Buren, Dan Graham, On Kawara, Sol Lewitt, Niele Toroni, Lawrence Weiner, Cy Twombly and many more. The exhibition at the haus der kunst concentrates on the period between 1966 and1978, thereby providing a lively portrait of the progressive, international art scene at that time.

Daniel Buren
Artist's lecture
How it all started – memories
11 may 10 / tue 20 h
In the 1960s, the French artist Daniel Buren began reducing painting to its essential structures. His "visual tool" consisted of alternating white and coloured stripes that were sufficiently neutral to have no expressive power whatsoever and thus enabled the artist to focus on the issue of context – the real space in which they appeared – and on the art system.
Daniel Buren sold one of his first works in 1969 to the Brussels art collectors Herman and Nicole Daled, a couple who gave artists the opportunity to create their works outside of the conventional market mechanisms. In 1970, they signed a contract with Daniel Buren in which they pledged to only buy works from him for one year.
In his artist's lecture, Daniel Buren, as a trailblazer of concept art, will be offering a lively depiction of those progressive years and will be presenting his modus operandi using lots of documentary material.
Afterwards: Daniel Buren talks with Chris Dercon
