curated by_vienna is an ambitious Viennese project focused on promoting the cooperation between galleries and curators. As a truly multicultural metropolis at the crossroads between Europe’s North and South, between East and West, between tradition and avant-garde, Vienna boasts a vibrant contemporary art scene. In addition to its world-class museums and non-profit art institutions, there are an amazing number of first-rate galleries that have established an international reputation for cutting-edge programming and are regular participants at the finest art fairs.

2010: Following a successful start in 2009 curated by_vienna will take place for the second time in Vienna from May 6 through June 5, 2010. For this year’s project the 20 participating galleries have invited artists to curate exhibitions on the topic of “art&film“ in the respective gallery premises.

art&film: In 2010 curated by_vienna will focus on references to cinema in art. In view of the long tradition of cross-fertilization between art and film, what still interests artists today about the moving picture and its representations? What opportunities are presented by the use of moving images in the gallery space? What foundations do new works build on, what role is played by issues of historicity and narration, by projection, installation or immersion, Hollywood and experimental film, feature films and sitcoms?

The range of artistic works today that make use of the filmed image or pointedly reference it is enormous. Documentary approaches are just as significant as performative or conceptual routes. Likewise to be considered are references to film as a pop and mass phenomenon, i.e. as a symptom or indicator of social change.

curated by_vienna 2010 attempts a comprehensive dissection of what is currently a particularly virulent web of relations in the cultural field – an exciting analysis that puts up for discussion currently prevailing institutional conditions as well as aesthetic explorations of space and time, and the quest for artistic and social scopes for action.

20 Viennese galleries will show artistic positions at the interface of art&film. Each of the participating galleries has invited one artist to curate a show on art&film. The artists are encouraged to present the unexpected and new, and also to include artists living and working in Vienna. This project allows visitors to compare the selected artworks and strategies of the individual galleries and curators and to gain valuable insight into both artistic and curatorial practices.
