Bert Theis è forse uno dei più coerenti assertori di una funzione dell’arte come momento di relazione, pur senza mai rinunciare alla qualità del manufatto che di volta in volta viene proposto. La sua è una rivisitazione di momenti topici del modernismo: si pensi alla “Piattaforma suprematista” presentata a Tirana nel 2008 o alle recenti strutture presentate al Museo Pecci di Prato e ricavate dai progetti di Walter Gropius per un istituto di filosofia (“Building Philosophy”). Forme derivate dal linguaggio modernista, ma sempre attente a favorire una libera fruizione da parte delle persone, cioè ad essere in qualche modo strutture per accogliere, permettendo la pausa, il sedersi, lo sdraiarsi, l’osservare etc. Sono note le sue proposte (solo utopiste?) di restituire lo spazio urbano alla natura, lasciando che solo pochi edifici, marcanti la riconoscibilità delle città, emergano dal fitto addensarsi della vegetazione.

La sua ricerca e produzione artistiche si sono intrecciate sempre più negli ultimi anni con l’attività di curatore e organizzatore di progetti pubblici in grado di promuovere la partecipazione della gente per la salvaguardia e qualificazione ‘dal basso’ dello spazio urbano, e per favorire in ogni modo una nuova idea di comunità e di convivialità.

Nel 2002 Theis insieme ad altri ha creato una piattaforma aperta nel Quartiere Isola in zona Garibaldi a Milano, che da allora promuove situazioni, conferenze, esposizioni, momenti di incontro e lavora con il comitato di quartiere. Si tratta di out, acronimo dall’inglese per indicare un ufficio auto-organizzato, dedicato alle trasformazioni urbane, che fa parte dei collettivi di Isola Art Center.

Considerando le trasformazioni che vengono attualmente interessando la terraferma veneziana, la Galleria Contemporaneo coglie l’occasione di ospitare un nuovo progetto espositivo curato direttamente dall’artista, il quale, oltre a presentare i suoi lavori, ha incluso nella mostra materiali e contributi di altri componenti di out (office for urban transformation): Marco Vaglieri, Alice Pintus, Mariette Schiltz, Alberto Pesavento, Mara Ferreri, e Kings.

Bert Theis ( n. 1952 in Lussemburgo, vive a Milano e Lussemburgo) Nel 2002 ha creato l’ufficio out (office for urban transformation) con sede a Milano e Mexico DF. Ha partecipato ad eventi d’arte internazionali come la Biennale di Venezia, 1995, Sculpture. Projects in Münster 1997, Arte all’Arte 1998, Manifesta 1998, Biennale di Gwangju 2002, Biennale di Tirana 2003, Biennale di Busan 2006, Biennale di Taipei 2008.

Bert Theis is perhaps one of the most consistent supporters of the art as a moment of relationship, never giving up the quality of the artworks he creates.

He focuses on a sort of reinterpretation of the topical moments of modernism: one only needs to think about the “Suprematist platform”, shown in Tirana in 2008, or about the recent structures shown at Museo Pecci in Prato and obtained from Walter Gropius’ projects for a philosophy institute (“Building Philosophy”). These projects grow out of the modernist language, but they are always careful to encourage a free use by the people. They are structures designed to receive, making possible to have a break, to seat down, to lie down, to look at, etc.

Bert Theis’ proposals (only utopian?) about bringing back the urban space to a state of nature are well known: his projects let a few buildings, which identify cities, emerge from thick greenery.

During the last few years, his artistic research and production have been more and more interlaced with his activity as a curator and a promoter of public projects able to involve people in protecting and qualifying the urban environment in a grassroots way, and also in supporting a new idea of community and conviviality.

In 2002 Theis and few friends of him created an open platform a sort of operating at the Isola District, near Garibaldi railway station in Milan, which is supporting situations, events, conferences, exhibitions, meetings and is working with the neighborhood associations. Its name is out, an English acronym that indicates a self-organized office dedicated to urban transformations, and is one of the groups of Isola Art Center.

Considering the transformations currently related to Venetian terra firma, Galleria Contemporaneo hosts a new exhibition project personally curated by the artist, who, besides showing his work, has included works of other members of out (office for urban transformation) in the exhibition: Marco Vaglieri, Alice Pintus, Mariette Schiltz, Alberto Pesavento, Mara Ferreri and Kings.
