Do / Redo / Undo

Wiels - Contemporary Art Center, Bruxelles

50 Years of Video Performance. A panorama of documents of one the most recent movements in the arts. With a selection of 100 works, the show provides a survey of 50 years of performance as captured on video, making it a research project as much as a traditional exhibition. Do / Redo / Undo is an artistic and scientific archive, a review of snapshots of some of the most influential happenings and performances of the past 50 years. In the context of the show Wiels also presents a broad selection of video works by Charlemagne Palestine. This exhibition of his video performances pays tribute to a unique visual artist who is also a pioneer of minimal and repetitive music.

During the Kunstenfestivaldesarts, Wiels will present a panorama of documents of one the most recent movements in the arts. With a selection of 100 works, Do / Redo / Undo will provide a survey of 50 years of performance as captured on video, making it a research project as much as a traditional exhibition. Do / Redo / Undo is an artistic and scientific archive, a review of snapshots of some of the most influential happenings and performances of the past 50 years.

A large section of DO / REDO/ UNDO is borrowed from the presentation 45 Years of Performance Video from EAI at PS1 Contemporary Art Centre, New York City (01.11.2009 - 26.04.2010) which highlighted over four decades of artists' performances created specifically for video, from body-based conceptual exercises of the late 1960s to new, digitally mediated performance narratives. Founded in 1971, Electronic Arts Intermix (EAI) is one of the world's leading nonprofit resources for video art.

A pioneering advocate for media art and artists, EAI's core program is the distribution and preservation of a major collection of over 3,500 new and historical media works by artists. EAI fosters the creation, exhibition, distribution and preservation of video art and digital art. EAI's activities include a preservation program, viewing access, educational services, extensive online resources, and public programs such as artists' talks, exhibitions and panels.

Charlemagne Palestine: Voodooo

In the context of DO /REDO /UNDO Wiels is pleased to present a broad selection of video works by the New York-born Brussels-based artist Charlemagne Palestine. This exhibition of his video performances, some of which have rarely been seen in Belgium, pays tribute to a unique visual artist who is also a pioneer of minimal and repetitive music. Charlemagne Palestine has presented and performed his works all over Europe and North America and his works are included in the collections of MoMA, New York, and the Centre Pompidou, Paris, among others.

Since the early '70s, with the development of portable video cameras, Charlemagne Palestine has produced video works. Wiels presents a unique selection of his "ritual incantations": Body Music I (1973), Body Music II (1974), Four Motion Studies (1974), Running Outburst (1975), Island Song (1976), Island Monologue (1976), Ritual in the Emptiness (2001), along with their quite chaotic installation, are whirlwinds of images and sounds. The exhibited works function as radical explorations of space, which physical and acoustical boundaries they test. The performer's body, his voice and the technical contingencies of video are put to the test. A real physical experience for both the performer ... and the visitor!

The Online Catalogue is a comprehensive resource on the artists and works in the EAI collection, and also features extensive materials on exhibiting, collecting and preserving media art.

The other works exhibited are borrowed from Belgium-based ressources: the video library of Jeunesse et Arts Plastiques, Argos Centre for Art and Media, the nonprofit association Vidéographie(s) and Mukha.

Project supported by: Mukha, Jeunesse & Arts Plastiques, ARGOS centre for art & media, Electronic Arts Intermix, Kunstenfestivaldesarts
