The exhibition showcases works ranging from a collaborative documentary on pets in Kibera (with members of the Maasai Mbili collective), to the exploration of sign systems and his ongoing investigation of memory and participation. These works have emerged as a result of living in the specific social and political context of Nairobi; as such he can be described as a contextual artist.

Sketches' is a solo show by the Nairobi-based artist Sam Hopkins. Like the title 'Sketches' implies, the show can be described as a collection of ideas in different forms and in differing stages of completion. These works have emerged as a result of living in the specific social and political context of Nairobi; as such he can be described as a contextual artist.
The exhibition showcases works ranging from a collaborative documentary on pets in Kibera (with members of the Maasai Mbili collective), to the exploration of sign systems and his ongoing investigation of memory and participation. At the opening DJ Zelalem will spin his trademark eclectic selection ranging from blues to afrobeat to electro.
Sam Hopkins is an artist whose work orbits around issues of public space and the negotiation of participatory practice. Recent projects include Slum TV, a grassroots media initiative that he co-founded in 2006, and Urban Mirror CBO, a group of public space activists of which he is an active participant. His work also encompasses more lyrical responses to the city, as can be seen by interventions as part of the Usually4 collective and this show in Nairobi, sketches.
