Videorama
Artclips from Austria

Videorama was originally curated by Angela Stief for the Kunsthalle Wien and presents recent Austrian video and film works from the Ursula Blickle video archive, focusing mainly on the past ten years. The ursula blickle video archive was established in 2007 and is the result of a cooperative effort by the Ursula Blickle Foundation, the University of Applied Arts in Vienna and the Kunsthalle
Wien. The idea behind this joint initiative was to make video works by Austrian and international artists known to a wide audience and to create a platform for video artists. Today the archive comprises almost 2500 works.

The exhibition "Videorama" at the MdM MÖNCHSBERG presents a selection of works from the original exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien. The presentation includes works by artists from the young and middle generation, including Erwin Wurm, Thomas Eller, Markus Schinwald, Gerwald Rockenschaub, Anna Jermolaewa, Dariuz Kowalski and many others, and gives visitors a fascinating insight into this multi-faceted and remarkable collection of Austrian video art.

Today we are permanently surrounded by TV, internet and media messages in public spaces. Internet platforms such as Youtube have turned videos into a mass phenomenon that is omnipresent in our everyday lives and influences our culture. Videorama is a large-scale installation of parallel video and audio tracks that allows visitors to immerse into a colourful world of animations, video films and documentation. The exhibition gives the audience a comprehensive survey of current Austrian media art and creates new references and worlds of experience. A video-DVD-manual has been published in conjunction with the exhibition. It is subdivided into the chapters Animating, Acting, Abstracting, Moving, Narrating and Transforming and contains all works that were shown in the original exhibition at the Kunsthalle Wien.

Erwin Wurm
Self-portrait as Cucumbers

We are glad to announce that another sculptural installation by Erwin Wurm will be on display at the MdM MÖNCHSBERG this summer, following the presentation of the artist‘s installation "Adorno was wrong with his idea about art" in 2006. Erwin Wurm, an internationally successful Austrian artist, uses the human body as recurring motif and point of reference for his works. He creates figural sculptures with bulgelike swellings, round bellies or torsos, which have been transformed into thought bubbles and "wardrobes". Wurm always succeeds in modifying the established concept of sculpture and integrating everyday objects into his installations.

The MdM MÖNCHSBERG is the first museum in Europe to present "Self-Portrait as Pickles", which was created in 2008, in its full size. As suggested by the title, the installation shows a "self portrait of the artist" with 37 pickles and cucumbers made from cast acrylic and naturalistically painted. Each cucumber or pickle is unique and presented atop a pedestal. As a result they are no longer just simple objects, but elevated to the status of works of art. The individuality of every single cucumber, their different forms and sizes, colours and surfaces become evident. The favourite Austrian snack - a bread roll filled with Leberkäse
and pickle – is an indispensible part of many people’s diet. The fact that Erwin Wurm has chosen this small, common and slightly obscene-looking, pickled fruit to portray himself, testifies to the artist‘s sense of humour, self-ridicule and his cynical approach to sculpture. If Erwin Wurm is a pickle, what are all the other Austrians? Wurm interacts with the viewer in a humorous and ironical way.
