Shaped by Culture presents about 30 black-and-white photographs of prehistoric sites in South America, Central America, and the southwestern United States.

Edward Ranney began visiting and photographing Peruvian archeological sites in 1970 as a college student and continued shooting in the region for several decades. His images explore the ways that Mayan, Incan, and Hispanic cultures—and their mainstream counterparts today—see, understand, and honor their environments.

“Ranney has shown a singular devotion to the Americas,” says photography curator Eric Paddock, who worked closely with the artist and chief curator Margaret Young-Sánchez to select works for Shaped by Culture. “His work has developed, and his knowledge of these places and the relationships between the people and their environment is both beautiful and wise.”

The photographs will be displayed on level four of the North Building, alongside objects from the museum’s renowned pre-Columbian and Spanish colonial collections, through September 26, 2010.

This exhibition is part of the DAM's celebration of Denver's Biennial of the Americas.

The Biennial of the Americas is an international event that celebrates the culture, ideas, and people of the Western Hemisphere, hosted by the City of Denver. The month-long affair starts July 1 and will include art exhibitions, roundtable discussions, music events, and more
