You are invited to attend the opening reception of Bower of Bliss, a
two-person exhibition with sculpture by Mary-Beth Gregg and paintings by
Mary Jones.
"The "bower of bliss" is a literary motif usually associated with The Faerie
Queene, Edmund Spenser's epic Elizabethan poem. In a nutshell, it's a kind
of enchanted forest; the greenery's heat reflects gold light and emits
fragrance... as the characters approach, their senses are attuned to faint,
rhythmic modulations... singing... Those who succumb to its artifice are
changed by the encounter, irrevocably transformed. In the context of this
exhibition, the bower of bliss has been pried loose from the text so that
its themes of pleasure, nature, narrative, and uncertainty can momentarily
shadow the work of these two artists...Mary Jones' abstract paintings
suspend a rottenly lush garden of earthly delights within investment-calibre
satellite space...Mary Beth Gregg's medium scale, polychrome figurative
sculptures focus on survival." (excerpt from Deborah Garwood's catalog
essay)
