We would like to inform you already now on our upcoming exhibition Five from the Emirates which will be inaugurated on September, 6. at 20:00 h in the Ludwig Forum for International Art in Aachen.
The so-called Five from the Emirates" are a group of artists from Dubai consisting of Hassan Sharif, Mohamed Kazem, Hussain Sharif, Abdulla al Sadi and M.A. Ibrahim. Since about three years I've been studying their works and their participation in exhibition in Dubai, Havanna, Nijmegen and Sittard.
With their works the group is - against all clichés of Arab art - referring to examples of conceptual art, thus emphasizing the intellectual and reflective aspect of their works. The materials used are often simple: sand, stone and wood. The artists are thus referring to a culture that has a direct connection with the surrounding nature - in contrast to the current development in the Emirates. The material is bundled, piled up, knotted and sorted and evoke traditions of the beduin life as well as personal memories. On the one hand, this artistic perspective of cultural characteristics and the own history integrates seamlessly into essential tendencies of the international art development, on the other hand it shows the discrepancy between beduin traditions and a high-tech nation in which art is becoming increasingly important as a way to recollect essential culture values.
The artist Mohamed Kazem and Khalid Rashid of the Al ltihad news paper" will be expected at the inauguration of the exhibition.
