Contemporaneity

MoCA Shanghai, Shanghai

This exhibition presents the artworks from Indonesian artists developed outside the context of Europe and the United States. It portrays a case in contemporaneity as a recent indicia of contemporary art that marks a tension between "globality" and "multeity". Furthermore, it displays works that substantiate the influence of ethnic art sensibilities that have never been fully understood in the paradigm of modern art or contemporary art. The show includes a presentation of artists' personal archives entitled "Live Another Thousand Years".

This exhibition will present a case in contemporaneity as a recent indicia of contemporary art that marks a tension between "globality" and "multeity". Globality "the present" (or "art now") is supposed to foster generality among the different art forms of different nations while in reality, as a result of decolonization, cultural and national differentiation intensifies and globalization in actuality enhances heterogeneity and supports multeity.

This exhibition will portray the concept of "multeity" in the contemporary art scene – and in particular, it is a presentation of artworks from Indonesian artists and the contemporary art development of Indonesia outside the context of Europe and the United States. This exhibition will display works that can easily be recognized as contemporary artworks and bring forth works in conventional medium to reveal an equivocal separation between modern and contemporary art outside Europe and the United States. Furthermore, it will display works that substantiate the influence of ethnic art sensibilities that have never been fully understood in the paradigm of modern art or contemporary art.

To present insight about contemporary culture in Indonesia, the exhibition will include a presentation of artists' personal archives entitled "Live Another Thousand Years". Each artist from the exhibition will be invited to curate their own presentation of archival materials related to their personal histories, which could include any material that the artists have found to be influential in the shaping of their viewpoints and their understanding of art and life in general, providing a broader spectrum of social transformation in recent years.

In addition the exhibition will also present a glimpse into the vibrant Indonesian film scene by screening a selection of Indonesian filmmakers through a special film program. This further accentuates our exhibition goal of expanding the presentation of Indonesian art and culture today by going beyond the visual arts and inviting a discussion as to the cultural discourses present within the whole region, not only of one country and how "globality" and "multeity" is present in contemporary Indonesian society.

Project is organized by Museum of Contemporary Art, AKR Group, China Gold Charity Foundation, H2 Foundation for Arts and Education with support from Bank Mandiri and Garuda Indonesia
