Rites of Passage. International Exhibition of Contemporary Arts
The Ostrale ́010 is presenting for the 4th time the complete spectrum of contemporary art in the
dilapidated structures of the former Erlwein Schlachthof in the Ostragehege in Dresden. The
Ostrale developed in a very short time to one of the most important art festivals in Germany and
Europe.
An international team of curators is responsible for the exhibition concept. The artistic director
of the Ostrale chooses the team of curators via a selection process. With this method a
thorough choice of curators and artists can be assured, which benefits the high quality
standard and the representativeness of the exposed artwork.
Curators of the Ostrale ́010: Andrea Hilger, Dr. Martin Müller, Dorota Kabiesz, Krzysztof Stanisławski
The Ostrale'010 will invite particularly artists who will deal with the still on the ground left arisings
and bring them together to new order in the transformic sense of artistic Rites of Passage.
More than 200 artists - painters, sculptors, sound, light, video, concept, installation, action- and
performace artists, will present International and European, young and established art on 15.000 m2
exhibition space and 50.000 m2 outside area.
The up to now realised exhibitions 2007, 2008 ans 2009 demonstrate in an impressive way the
development of the exhibition area and the Art Centre of the Ostrale.
The festival's popularity attests as well the importance and the growing perception of the remarkable
project.
After 4.000 visitors in 2007 there have been already 11.000 visitors in 2009 who have found their way
to the Ostrale and its exhibitions and events.
Out of Ostrale
During the three week exhibition duration of the Ostrale’010 the best artwork will be selected to be
shown as "OUT OF OSTRALE" in different European cities after the ending of the festival in Dresden.
Each participating city’s exhibition will have a duration of approximately 4 weeks. In this manner the
OSTRALE presents the highlights of its actual exhibition in different international cities.
To ensure the quality of the shown artwork, the head of the OSTRALE together with the responsible of
each international cooperation partner will make a specified choice, as the spectrum of artwork has to
be adapted to the respective exhibition spaces. The format of the touring exhibition multiplies the
international awareness level not only through its foreign representation, but also through the potential
visitor force of the respective host countries.
In the year 2010 the following cities are planned to be hosts of "OUT OF OSTRALE": Katowice in
Poland, Eupen in Belgium and Pécs in Hungary.
Katowice in Polend: 15th of October - 14th of November
Eupen in Belgium: 26th of November - 23th of December
The gallery in Katowice is located on the premises of the former mineshaft of the "Wieczorek-2 Mine,
the history of which dates back to the year 1826. Now this antique structure is used e.g. as exhibition
space of the Wilson Shaft Gallery (the area of nearly 2500 m2). This entire area is divided into three
halls: the so-called Small, Medium and Gallery. Similar to the OSTRALE, with the Wilson Shaft Gallery
an old industrial place has been revitalised in the new function of an art exhibition space.
The Heidberg Cloister in Eupen (Belgium) has been built between 1700-1727 by the religious
community of "Rekollektinnen" as a cloister and school for girls. Nun’s cells, novices living space,
school- and teachers rooms, church, chapel and gym build an atmosphere where the artwork is set
into a new context to the historic surrounding.
OSTRALE.xtra
With OSTRALE.xtra in 2009 a format has been established, which appears to be a platform for the
performing arts, literature and music apart from the classic supporting program. The format builds a
space for experimental art, the combination of different arts as well as inspiration and new emerging
arts. Performing arts and fine arts meet and create mutual benefits.
Events, concerts, readings, performances and other kind of intermedia genres, which in interaction to
the exposed artwork lead through the exhibition form one focus of the OSTRALE.xtra program.
Additionally other program highlights apart from the normal opening hours invite the audience to
discover the Ostrale – centre of arts not only as an exhibition space, but also as a place of culture,
contact, communicative exchange and resulting from this the activation of a general lust for life.
Different stages, venues, concert halls and open air area wait to be entered.
Screening "GG19"
27.7. 2010, 4 p.m.
Location: Ostrale, Futterstall Tor 3
The idea of 'GG 19 - The Film - The Workshop' is to include the impact of the rich diversity of international contemporary art into the examination of the general conditions of everyday life in germany with the means of art.
Based on the film 'GG 19 - 19 good reasons for democracy', that has achieved to transpose the legal conditions of everyday life - the 19 basic rights of the German constitution out of its abstract juridical wording into 19 entertaining short films. In contrary to the original wording these easily provoke a controversial discussion because of the cinematic experience.
Artists of film, theater, music/ poetry, design, mixed media collages and creative writing will accompany this discussion in different modules with their means of art and guide the participant to realise and express their individual view in the boundary of these genres.
