Early works
an exhibition by Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister
Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675) faces the viewer as a master of his art even in his early works. All of his early preserved works, Diana and her Companions, Christ in the House of Mary and Martha as well The Procuress, will now be united and shown in one place. It becomes obvious how self- and style-confident Vermeer absorbed influences of diverse artists from Italy or the Northern and Southern Netherlands in his early work. In doing this, he developed compositions with an independent and unfamiliar effect. At the same time, characteristics, which will become important for his more mature style, can be found in the work of the young, open-minded artist, who was eager to experiment. We can find the high quality of his figure painting, the intensive dispute with light effects and his love for a reflective calmness in his pictures.
The exhibition is accompanied by an extensive educational program for visitors of all ages, which will emanate from Vermeer’s painting Girl Reading a Letter by an Open Window, being the second painting to hang in Dresden.
