This show presents confrontations between the quotidian and the extraordinary, and the reasoned and the deranged, and dwells on the bewildering experiences that people subconsciously synthesize on a daily basis.
Ordinary Madness presents confrontations between the quotidian and the extraordinary, and the reasoned and the deranged, and dwells on the bewildering experiences that people subconsciously synthesize on a daily basis.
Ordinary Madness mines Carnegie Museum of Art’s rich holdings of contemporary art. It presents confrontations between the quotidian and the extraordinary, and the reasoned and the deranged, and dwells on the bewildering experiences that people subconsciously synthesize on a daily basis. These works across media suggest that the everyday is in fact laced with the mad, uncanny, and surreal. At the heart of the exhibition are the strengths, quirks, and institutional history recorded in the museum’s superlative collection of contemporary art, including works by such artists as Robert Arneson, Lynda Benglis, James Lee Byars, Paul Chan, Charles Burchfield, Isa Genzken, Robert Gober, Philip Guston, Rachel Harrison, Karen Kilimnik, Barry Le Va, Peter Saul, Doris Salcedo, and Christopher Wool. The exhibition will also include a 16 mm film series and artist talks.
