Arkles, Robert Bielat, Jeffrey Klein, Nolan Simon, and James Stoia.
In The T1 and T2 Galleries
After one year, the T1 and T2 galleries have housed sculptures, paintings
and installations large and small and will continue to test exhibition
possibilities with this seasons premier.
Exhibiting in the T1 Gallery, Mare L. Costello aka Free Multi-Media, Inc.
has created a new body of work entitled Lamination which has developed out
of a background in sculpture and the need to have fun. From her time at The
Center for Creative Studies, Free approached art from two distinct avenues,
these being the world of the fine artist with cast aluminum, wood, and
perfectly buffed steel works and the world of advertising for Detroits rave
scene. After years of creating within this dichotomy, Frees work has
developed into low and high reliefs and sculpture created from her own
photography, laminate and plastic.
In the T2 Gallery artists Jeanne R. Bieri and Teresa L. Petersen install
their collaborative project; Harvest Gold which approaches fine art from
the urban archeologists P.O.V. Both artists have worked in recycled
materials and assemblage for years on end. These two artists have traveled
similar paths not only with their approach to material, but also with their
educational history, both receiving MFAs from Wayne State and both having
previously received their Bachelor of Science degrees. This understanding
of structure (in Petersens case, biology) is evident in their reconstructed
and renewed works. This installation will utilize and reconfigure tossed
off items from the streets of Detroit to then be dismantled and distributed
to the viewers at the close of the show.
The First Floor Gallery
detroit contemporary introduces Peter Mallo (Rochester, NY) with his first
solo exhibition, Place and Placement in the First Floor Gallery. A
recent graduate of CCS (Dec 01), Mallos work was showcased in the Center
Galleries, Selections IV to represent the Fine Arts Department. He
returns to Detroit with paintings expanding well beyond their previous
existence, now protruding from the wall yet still retaining subtlety and
signs of purposeful and delicate reworking with each layer upon layer.
Marks that appear to be compositional scratches reveal themselves as much
more upon close inspection.
The Second Floor Gallery
Jason Brougham (Brooklyn, NY) brings us New Form in the Second Floor
Gallery, a solo exhibition of large-scale oil paintings that discuss mark,
form, and the absence of these in the process of examining subject.
Brougham struggle(s) to capture the precise point between the emergence of
the painting and a death by over-completion, admires Charlotte Kotik,
Curator of Contemporary Art at the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
The Brick Room Gallery
This exhibition christens The Brick Room Gallery anew and sets the pace for
site-specific installation in this space, which will be the first of many.
Free Multi-Media, Inc. uses color and light to create, Multi-Color
Lamination with works installed from the ceiling.
