Luke Butler

Kantor Gallery is pleased to present Drop Shadow, an exhibition of new paintings and collages by Luke Butler on view from September 23rd through October 26th, 2010.

The artist's first solo show at the gallery brings together two distinct but thematically interrelated series: Enterprise and The End. Butler's paintings offer serial representations of iconic male characters, sets and situations spliced from popular television programs of his childhood. Despite the popular source material, Butler's practice is engaged in an extended inquiry into what exists beneath the fragile veneer of this iconography. Through his intervention, Butler subverts each program's propagation of an idealized heroic masculinity, excavating and appropriating specific and evocative images. Conflating and equalizing disparate characters and programs, Butler both reinvents and de-familiarizes them.

A similar approach characterizes Butler's collages, which offer an extended mediation on the syntax of the moving image, as well as his own artistic process. The drop shadows in these works double as the shadows of Butler's fictional self-insertion, of his reclamations of images, and the formal structures he appropriates.

Luke Butler received his MFA from the California College of Arts. He has held solo exhibitions at Second Floor Projects, San Francisco and Silverman Gallery, San Francisco. His work has also been exhibited in numerous group exhibitions including ABC No Rio, New York; Galerie Georg Kargl, Vienna; Invisible Exports, New York and Exile, Berlin, among others. Most recently Butler has been included in the 2010 California Biennial at the Orange County Museum of Art. Butler currently lives and works in San Francisco.
