Coming of Age brings together twentieth century works from Tate collections which deal with the process of growing older: with personal change and transition, and with memory, reminiscence and self-knowledge. All the works are by women, exploring life experiences from a distinctively female perspective.
Coming of Age brings together twentieth century works from Tate collections
which deal with the process of growing older: with personal change and
transition, and with memory, reminiscence and self-knowledge. All the works
are by women, exploring life experiences from a distinctively female
perspective.
Using diverse means of expression, the works reflect the century
s radical changes in artistic practice. Yet beneath seemingly disparate
portrayals of similar themes runs a common vein of candid, humorous and
sometimes provocative observation. The exhibition also charts the changing
status of women artists within Tate Collections, from a time when they were
sparsely represented to the more balanced situation today. In that sense, too,
this is an exhibition about coming of age.
Artists featured include Gwen John, Dod Proctor, Vanessa Bell, Nancy Spero,
Louise Bourgeois, Paula Rego, Cindy Sherman, Nan Goldin, Sherrie Levine,
Rineke Dijkstra and Tracey Moffat.
