with a Satellite Venue in New York City
The HomeBase Project, an artist run site-specific interdisciplinary public art project that
explores the archetype of home marks its fifth consecutive year by going international.
HomeBase V Berlin will take up residence in an unoccupied building that once functioned
as a youth hostel and a neighbouring vacant bus depot, located in the Pankow district, in
what was once communist East Berlin. An international contingent of artists working in
the visual and performing arts will transform the venue through site-specific art projects
exploring the notion of “Home”. The site will open to the public from Sep 21st through Oct
12th free of charge with a full cultural program of events, lectures and performances that
will be broadcasted on-line.
“In many ways,” says Anat Litwin, artistic director and founder of the HomeBase Project,
Berlin today echoes the artistic and urban landscape of New York in the 1980s. Its unique
transient urban tapestry - a combination of a vibrant contemporary cultural scene, a
loaded history, and the traces of demarcation between east and west, make it an
extremely stimulating staging ground for the artistic exploration of the meaning of
Home.”
HomeBase’s objectives are to seek out areas of the urban environment undergoing
transitional changes and integrate contemporary art into the everyday local experience,
opening up the role of art as an educational tool for cross-cultural dialog, social
integration, and community cultivation.
The HomeBase template consists of the following three phases:
Residency – For three weeks, artists and HomeBase team members participate in an
Artist-in-Residency program that includes group dinners and education workshops with
invited guest lectures that are intended to stimulate the exploration of home in relation
to the site, addressing issues related to the history of the neighbourhood, the
architecture of the building, and cultural notions of home. During the residency, the
artists are assigned their own room in which to create their individual work of art.
Public – At this time, doors will be open free to the public who will view numerous art
rooms, as well as experience a full range of cultural program including lectures,
workshops, performances, events, parties, and open mic sessions that will also be
broadcasted via the HomeBase channel.
Documentation – The process of building HomeBase is documented from start to finish
and includes collaborative efforts, logistics of the team, the group dynamics and the
creative processes of the artists, urban exploration and group dynamics in interaction
with the neighbours and public, using all available media created by participants, whether
they are artists or members of the community.
As a result of an international open call, the HomeBase jury selected the following twelve
artists to participate in this year’s project:

ABOUT THE HOMEBASE PROJECT
Founded in 2006, the HomeBase Project is an international
site-specific public art project whose mission is to stimulate a contextual and
interdisciplinary exploration of the archetype of home. In pursuing this exploration
annually, HomeBase seeks to integrate contemporary art into the everyday urban
experience, and to challenge the role of art as an educational tool for cross-cultural
dialogue, community cultivation, and social integration. For its first four years, HomeBase
took place in different locations in New York City, and for its fifth year, the project will
take on an international scope and reside in the Pankow district in Berlin with a small,
satellite event space in New York. New York, however, will always be the home and the
base for the project. HomeBase Project is a participant in the Fiscal Sponsorship Program
of FJC, a registered 501(c)3 organization.
